Description	:	John W. Wood, one of the early residents of this city, died at his home on the North side Tuesday evening, after an illness of several weeks duration. The deceased was born in Williamsport, Maryland, Feb. 18, 1850. When a young man he came to Cedar Rapids, this state, with his parents, and from there he went to Niobrara, Neb. Wood, one of the early residents of this city, died at his home on the North side Tuesday evening, after an illness of several weeks duration. The deceased was born in Williamsport, Maryland, Feb. 18, 1850. When a young man he came to Cedar Rapids, this state, with his parents, and from there he went to Niobrara, Neb. On March 3, 1882, he was united in marriage with Miss Belle Chambers at Niobrara. Soon after their marriage they came to Calliope where Mr. Wood engaged in the jewelry business. He was an expert jeweler and for a number of years carried on a very successful business. He was mayor of Calliope for two years and held other responsible positions. With the decline of the town of Calliope where he had all of his investments he met with the town's reverses and was never able to recoup his lost resources. He was kind and generous to a fault. Eight children were born to them, six of whom are still living. The children are Guy C., of Los Angeles; Mrs. R. J. Cogswell, Seattle; Walter, Ruth, Marion and Lawrence of this city. The funeral will be hold at the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. The W.O.W of which order he was a member will have charge of the services at the grave. Alton Democrat 2/15/1912
