John was born July 25, 1941, in Clarence, Missouri, the son of Willie Olin and Carolyn Elizabeth (Hayden) Wood. He was united in marriage to Ruth E. Hutton on July 3, 1960, in Clarence, Missouri. She survives. John was born July 25, 1941, in Clarence, Missouri, the son of Willie Olin and Carolyn Elizabeth (Hayden) Wood. He was united in marriage to Ruth E. Hutton on July 3, 1960, in Clarence, Missouri. She survives. He is survived by three daughters; Angie Mefford (Terry) of Clarence, Missouri, Beverly Burns (Steve) of Anabel, Missouri, and Trudy McManus (Walt) of Columbia, Missouri; six grandchildren, Will Mefford (Courtney), Wes Mefford, Hayden Burns, Preston Burns, Jordan McManus, and Jonathan McManus; three step-grandchildren, Kyley Mefford (Sarah), Matt Mefford (Tara), and Betsy Sluhan (Andy); seven great-grandaughters; one brother, Chuck Wood (Martha); and two sisters, Jan Smith and Jill Durbin (Gary). John was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Judy Mattingly. John lived his entire life in Clarence, Missouri. He was a member of the Clarence United Methodist Church, and served as chairman on the board of trustees, parsonage and playground committee, and sang in the choir. He was also a member to the Maplewood Cemetery Board and the Clarence High School Alumni. John owned Wood Locker Service from 1964 to 1985. He later was an independent insurance agent from 1985 to 2017. For 20 years, he drove a school bus for the South Shelby School District. John enjoyed driving the school bus, watching trains pass through town, and playing with his Lionel model train. Most of all, he loved spending time with family, especially attending his grandchildren’s activities. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 10 am at the Clarence United Methodist Church in Clarence, MO, with Pastor Delbert Earlywine and Pastor Jim Bolin officiating the service. Visitation will be held Friday, May 12, 2017 from 5pm to 8pm at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home, in Clarence, Missouri. Burial will follow the service at the Maplewood Cemetery in Clarence, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Clarence United Methodist Church or Hospice Compassus.
