John was born October 15, 1921, at Gordon, Nebraska to Madden James and Cora Bell (Gardner) Abbott. He grew up at Gordon. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942-1943. On March 16, 1945, he married Mary Shelly at Harrison, Nebraska. They lived at Gordon until moving to Scottsbluff in 1952. He worked at the Chevrolet Garage until he purchased his own shop in 1960. He owned and operated Abbott Auto Repair in Scottsbluff for 30 years. He also worked at Lockwood Manufacturing as a welder for a number of years. He then transported cars for car dealers until his retirement three years ago. On July 3, 1972, he married Harriet Stephens at Casper, Wyoming. His hobbies and interests included hunting, fishing, boating and dancing. Survivors include is children and their spouses, Janice (Leonard) Deines of Torrington, Wyoming, Linda (Leroy) Surgener of Scottsbluff; Betty (Tim) Curtis of Gering; Delona (Ron) Weil of Black Hawk, South Dakota, Rick (Kathy) Abbott of Melbeta and Marilyn (Les) Aringdale of Aurora, Nebraska; sister, Nellie Nielsen of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; second wife, Harriet Abbott of Scottsbluff; six stepchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; three infant children; three brothers, William, Ernest and Leonard; and sister, Velma Han.
