Description	:	John W. Figard was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, February 6, 1850, and departed this life at his home in Seward, Nebraska, May 10, 1925, aged 75 years, 3 months and 4 days. Read More	John W. Figard was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, February 6, 1850, and departed this life at his home in Seward, Nebraska, May 10, 1925, aged 75 years, 3 months and 4 days. Early in his youth his parents and he made his home with his brother, D. H. Figard, and while yet in his teens, came with him to Nebraska in 1867, sailing down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to Nebraska City, thence by stage to the banks of Plum creek, just east of the present city of Seward where he arrived 58 years ago this month. During those pioneer days he encountered many hardships and privations, working at anything he could find to do, such as cutting wood, making posts and rails, digging wells, hiring out to farmers, etc. After gaining his majority he homesteaded 80 acres of land 4 1/2 miles northwest of Seward. Erecting a house thereon he employed his time in improving the land, teaching school in his house in the winter months. On November 15, 1876, he was married to Miss Emily A. Slonecker, and to this union eleven children were born, five sons and six daughters, one son having died in infancy. Declining in health, he with his wife retired from the farm a few years ago and purchased a comfortable home in Seward. In his early youth he was converted to Christianity, living an upright and Christian life since that time. He was baptized into the faith of the church of God, preached its doctrine till disorganized here. He then joined the United Brethren Church in Seward soon after its organization. He was always faithful and true, serving in all departments of the church with an influence that has always been felt. Surely it can be said that the world has been made better by his having lived in it. The deceased leaves a faithful wife, four sons, six daughters, 20 grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. The funeral services were conducted at the United Brethren church by the pastor, Rev. E. L. Reese, at 2:30 p.m. on Monday. Seward Journal, Seward, NE, Thurs, May 14, 1925
