He was the fourth child born to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Zweck and came to this country with his parents, brother and sister in the year 1853, being twenty-one years of age, settling in Ulster township, in Floyd country. The last stage of the journey from Dubuque was over the old ox trail with oxen. They erected a little log house and the new home was speedily established, one of the very first homes established in this part of the county. Mr. Zweck's father died a few years after coming to this country. Mr. Zweck continued to live on the home farm with his mother for a number of years. Mr. Zweck was married to Anna Gartner of this county, a native of France in 1846, after which he and his wife continued to farm the home place. To this union ten children were born, five preceding him in death and five remaining. Mr. and Mrs. Zweck retired from farming in 1899 and moved to Charles City, where his wife died on December 24, 1900. After his wife died he continued to make his home in that city, until he received a painful injury, April, 1916, by being run over by an automobile, the --------- permanently, though slightly, crippling him, since which time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Anna Kannengeiser at Rockford. John Zweck died in Rockford, Jun 17th, at the age of 90 years, 4 months and 2 days. Funeral services were held in the Catholic church at Rockford, of which he was a devout member. On account of the absence of Father Whalen, Father Jensen of Charles Cityread high mass, assisted by Father Hogan, of Greene who gave a brief sketch of Mr. Zweck's spiritual life. The music and singing was rendered by the Cartersville choir. Mr. Zweck leaves to mourn his death one sister, Mrs. Susan Cimmyotti of North Washington and five children, Sister Mary Zeta, who is a sister in the convent at Buffalo, N.Y.; John Zweck, of Dougherty; Barbara Kannengeiser, of Flood Creek; Anna Kannengeiser, of this city and Julia Mullen of Doughertyall of whom were present at the -------- except Sister Mary Zeta, who was unable to come. Besides the relatives many friends from Charles City, Roseville, Dougherty and Greene attended the last services. The remains of this aged pilgrim were laid to rest in the Roseville cemetery.
