Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, directed by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, directed by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg. Mr. Arends was born May 18, 1933, in the Cordova community, the son of the late Gerrit Arends and the late Ruby Elizabeth Smoak Arends. He was retired from Edisto Gas with more than 50 years of service. Johnny was an avid gardener; his greatest joy was sharing the best of what he grew with his friends. Johnny's children and grandchildren were his hobbies and the joy of his life. A hug from Daddy John's long arms and huge hands will be a loving warm memory. He was preceded in death by a sister, Louie Varnell, and a brother, Gerrit Arends. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dolly Black Arends of the home; two sons, John A. (Tony) Arends of Cordova, Andy (Wendy) Arends of Orangeburg; four grandchildren, Rachael Arends, Brandon and Sarah Swatts, and Andrew Arends; a brother, James F. "Jimmy" Arends of Cordova.
