His funeral service will be held at the Gering First United Methodist Church, on Feb. 12,2005. Graveside services will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Lee was born in Trieste, Italy, on June 7, 1952, to John and Esther (Key) Buffington. The family moved to Scotia, Neb., when Lee was one year old and to Elgin, seven years later. Lee attended Elgin Public Schools and graduated in 1970. He earned his Eagle Scout Badge during high school. Lee attended Wayne State College for three years before moving to Lincoln, where he was employed by Kiner Supply. Lee met his soul mate, Pam, at a Lincoln park. They were married in Lincoln on Oct. 11, 1975, and shared 29 wonderful years together. They were truly best friends. They moved to rural Mitchell in 1976, where they enjoyed beautifying their home and acreage and raising a variety of livestock. Many happy times were shared while living on the acreage. Lee was employed by U.S. Supply for 2 years. In 1979, the late Mick Reavis asked Lee to work for him at Gering Plumbing and Heating, where he earned his journeymans and masters plumbing licenses. In 1987, Lee and Bill Schlaepfer formed their partnership, Gering Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Lee truly loved his work and enjoyed dealing with various contractors, tradesmen, suppliers, and clients. Lee’s hobbies included pheasant hunting with his dad, and brothers. They shared many great times hunting in Elgin and in this area. Lee, greatly enjoyed spending time at the cabin at Lake Minatare. He loved cruising on the pontoon boat, riding the jet ski and fishing. Occasionally a fish would find his hook. He loved working in the yard and garden and always had extra produce to share with friends and neighbors. Lee never met a stranger and did volunteer work whenever he was asked. He volunteered in building the Farm and Ranch Museum. He served as a captain for the YMCA Support Campaign and served on the board of directors for the building and risk management committee. Lee is a past Commodore of the North Platte Valley Boat Club.He volunteered many hours to theimprovement of the club and its facilities. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He was a member of the Nebraska Rural Water Association and the Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors Association of Nebraska. He donated to the blood bank as often as possible. Lee was loved and respected by many. He touched a lot of lives in a positive way through his work and personal life. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Lee was preceded in death by his mother, Esther (Key) Buffington; both maternal and paternal grandparents; two uncles and one aunt.
