Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ord First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Stephanie Hayes will officiate. Johnny Vincent Hyde was born Aug. 18, 1936, on a farm 12 miles west and 3 miles north of Taylor to parents Charles Vincent Hyde and Mary Ellen (Ferguson) Hyde, joining his older brother, Melvin Hyde. He attended Sunnyside rural school for two years and finished grades 2 through 12 at Taylor High School, where he graduated as valedictorian. Johnny married Delores Virginia Dunbar on Jan. 9, 1954, in Ord. He furthered his education at Kearney State College, completing his bachelor’s degree and subsequently his master’s degree in education. Johnny started his teaching career at West End School in Loup County for two years, Almeria School (K-8th grade) for three years, then sixth grade at Ord Elementary School for 36 years. Johnny enjoyed coaching fifth and sixth grade basketball, Junior Olympics track, refereeing high school basketball and was committee chairman for the annual Optimists elementary track meet for Valley County rural and public schools. He received awards for Outstanding Committee Chairman from the Optimist Club and Outstanding Young Educator from the Ord Jaycees. He also enjoyed playing town team basketball league, and traveling to multiple towns to compete. In addition to teaching, Johnny had a painting business, Kremke-Hyde Paint. He also enjoyed working on the ranch, raising cattle northwest of Taylor. Johnny was a good steward of the land on their family farm, the Ferguson Homestead, with his brother, Melvin. He could often be found hunting, fishing and watching and betting on sporting events. Johnny spent many deer seasons entertaining hunters, especially the Kremke family and friends. He and Delores also went on many adventures with lifelong friends David and Donna Hyde. Johnny was devoted to his wife, Delores, of 52 years, raising three daughters, and loved attending his nine grandchildren’s activities. Many memories were created at grandpa and grandma’s house, from holidays to birthdays to graduations. He always made sure his family knew how much he loved each of them. When Delores passed in 2006, she took a part of Johnny with her, and there is no doubt he is happy to be reunited with her now. After 42 years of teaching, Johnny retired in 1996 and moved to Burwell in 2001. Known for his relentless teasing and quick wit, Johnny always kept the room laughing. Honest to a fault, you never had to wonder what Johnny was thinking as he wouldn’t hesitate to let you know. Johnny was always quick with a joke and kept everyone on their toes. Sometimes irreverent but definitively unique, Johnny left an impression and will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Survivors include his brother, Melvin Lucian Hyde of Burwell; three daughters and sons-in-law, Terry (Hyde) and Mike McCoy of West Sacramento, Calif., Jeanne (Hyde) and Dale Peterson of Ord and Cathy (Hyde) and Stan Foster of Taylor; nine grandchildren, Shannon (Peterson) and Scott Bruha of Kearney, Jessica Peterson of Vail, Colo., Heidi Peterson of Ord, Jamie (Foster) and Dustin Copsey of Burwell, Jennifer Foster of Maui, Hawaii, Kellie (Peterson) and Nick Reed of Kearney, Alisha (Peterson) and Bradley Welniak of Omaha, John McCoy of West Sacramento, Calif., and Megan McCoy of West Sacramento, Calif; five great-grandchildren, Payton, Jordyn and Reeslyn Bruha of Kearney, and Dugan and Leah Copsey of Burwell; brother-in-law, Hank and Jeanie Dunbar of Lincoln; and nephews, Jeffrey Dunbar and Mathilde Hungerford of Denver, Colo., and Zach and Desiree Dunbar of Beaverton, Ore. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Virginia (Dunbar) Hyde, and his parents, Charles Vincent and Mary Ellen (Ferguson) Hyde.
