Description	:	Jon Strong and his wife were married in Iceland in 1872 and in 1884 emigrated to America. After short periods in Ontario, Winnipeg and North Dakota they finally came west to Calgary in 1889 and homesteaded the NE 34-37-2W5. Jon had a very real talent of his own in carpentry and cabinet making, skills which he developed in himself. Tombstones made of sandstone in the Tidastoll cemetery testify to this. It is said he made his own skates and was an expert on them as an older man. The house he built on the homestead was one of the better types in the community. He made chairs, tables and desks. Jon and Helga had a family of one son, Jon married to Annie Sveinson, and 5 daughters Regina (Mrs. Mundi Stephanson); Lena (Mrs. John Benedictson); Bena, Millie and Emily. (From Grub-Axe to Grain... by the Spruceview School Area Historical Society) Death of J. J. Strong On March 12th, the day of his birth, at 60 years of age, Mr. John J. Strong, a well-known and respected citizen of Markerville, died after a short illness. The cause of his death was due to brain fever. Mr. Strong was a native of Iceland, coming here sixteen years ago from Cavalier, North Dakota. He was a carpenter by trade, which he followed in connection with his farm work. He leaves six children to mourn his death: Josie, Millie, Mrs. Benedictson, Mrs. G. Stevenson and John, who live in the vicinity of Markerville, and Mrs. J. Kernested of Winnipeg Beach. On Monday the deceased was interred at the Tindastoll Cemetery. The sympathy of the whole community rests with the bereaved family. Excerpt from The Innisfail Free Lance, March 19, 1908, page 1
