Although Jonathan died in February of 1880, his name still appears on the 1880 census of Grass Valley Township, Nevada County, Calif., which was enumerated 28 June 1880. Children BORN SINCE June 1, 1880, will be OMITTED. Members of Families who have DIED SINCE June 1, 1880, will be INCLUDED. The foregoing seems to indicate that Jonathan's name should not have appeared on this census, since he died prior to June of 1880. Jonathan Butler was a farmer who came to California in 1850. He settled on Squirrel Creek, and in 1869 he purchased the Chollar Ranch, where he resided until the time of his death. The 1900 census reveals that Jonathan's widow, Rebecca (Fawcett) Butler was the mother of ten children, 7 of whom were living. The following 8 children have been revealed through the census: Elizabeth age 3 in 1860; age 13 in 1870; age 23 in 1880 Dora age 1 in 1860; not present in 1870 William H. age 9 in 1870; age 19 in 1880 Harriet age 8 in 1870; age 18 in 1880 Franklin age 6 in 1870; age 16 in 1880 (Frank B.) George age 4 in 1870; age 14 in 1880 Jessie age 1 in 1870; age 11 in 1880 Nettie G. age 8 in 1880 Jonathan Butler's sister, Amanda (Butler) Young, is seen as a "widdow" in the 1860 Butler household. She had become estranged from her parents after eloping at an early age, and after her husband and small child were killed by lightning in Ohio, she came to live with her brother in California. Amanda later married Myles Poore O'Connor who had met a great deal of success in mining, having been in on the May 8, 1863 discovery, in partnership with John and Edward Coleman, of the Idaho Mine. Myles was an early day lawyer here-abouts, later became a judge and also served in the California State Assembly. He lent a hand to Father Dalton in helping to bring the Sisters of Mercy to Nevada County in order to establish an orphanage, and served 9 terms as Justice of the Peace for Grass Valley. He was also elected to the state Senate. Later in life, the O'Connor's removed to San Jose and established O'Connor Sanitarium, which was later rebuilt and re-named O'Connor Hospital. The Butler family surname graces Grass Valley's Butler Street up to this very day. Note wife, Rebecca's maiden name also graces Grass Valley's, Fawcett Street.
