All known Goodrich surnamed descendants of Jonathan's immigrant father are through Jonathan and his wife Abigail Crafts. No record of the birth of Jonathan appears in the Wethersfield records yet L. W. Case in 1889 in the Goodrich Family in America claimed Jonathan was born on Oct. 23, 1657. This is an impossible date of birth. On Sept. 7, 1680 as a minor under 21 years of age, Jonathan appeared in Court and made choice of Lieut. Samuel Steele as his Guardian, which the court approved. If Jonathan was born in 1657 as claimed, on Sept. 7, 1680 he would have been an adult male less than two full months shy of his 23rd birthday. No legal necessity would have required the appointment of a guardian to manage his affairs. On May 18, 1703 in Hartford before John Winthrop, Esq., Governor of the Connecticut Colony, witnessed by Hezekiah Willis and Caleb Stanley, Jr., both of Hartford, and attested by Eleazer Kimberley, Secretary of the Connecticut Colony, Jonathan Goodrich, of Wethersfield, Taylor, "one of the sons of John Goodrich, late of Wethersfield, Husbandman, deceased" had a power of attorney issued in which Jonathan appointed Nicholas Hallam of New London, mariner, as his lawful attorney to act in England regarding "one certain Messuage or Tenement in Hegesett, in county Suffolk, formerly belonging to and in the possession of William Goodrich, of Hegesett, Clerk, and now of Right belonging to me." Two days later on May 20, 1703 at Hartford before John Winthrop, Esq., William Warner "age" about 57 years, and Thomas Welles, "aged" about 41 years, both of Wethersfield, appeared to "testify from personal knowledge and acquaintance with John Goodrich, late of Wethersfield, Husbandman, deceased,...that the said John Goodrich left another son at his decease named Jonathan Goodrich, who now (since the said Joseph his death) is reputed only son surviving...Said Jonathan Goodrich, about 38 years of age, married and has several children living." (Conn. State Archives, Private Controversies, Vol. 5, No. 243.) Of Jonathan's two witnesses, William Warner was Lieut. and Deacon William Warner, Sr., husband of Hannah Robbins. Warner died testate at Wethersfield Feb. 20, 1713/14 (g.s.) "in the 69th year of his age" (i.e., 68 years old and Ætatis suæ 69), indicating he was born on or after Feb. 21, 1644/45. In the year 1703 Warner was a deputy from Wethersfield to the Conn. General Court and on May 20, 1703 he was, by relative calculation, at most 58 years and 3 months old. The second witness was Capt. Thomas Welles, grandson of Gov. Thomas Welles, and son of Hon. Samuel Welles and Elizabeth Hollister of Glastonbury. He was born of record at Wethersfield July 29, 1662. On May 20, 1703 Capt. Welles was then 40 years, 9 months and 21 days old, written in the cited document as "aged" about 41 years (i.e., Ætatis suæ 41). Thus, with reasonable assurance that Jonathan, then under oath, was in fact "about 38 years of age" on May 20, 1703 indicates he was born no earlier than on or after May 21, 1664. On Nov. 11, 1702, Jonathan's father-in-law, Sgt. Moses Crafts, on Jonathan's behalf, was issued a writ of citation by the General Court to require Jonathan's brother-in-law, Daniel Rose, one of the administrators of the estate of Jonathan's father, to appear and render an account of Daniel's administration, Jonathan complaining he had not received his full part of his father's estate according to the distribution ordered by the probate court in September 1680. On Mar. 2, 1702/3 Daniel Rose was granted further time to finish his administration and on Apr. 7, 1703 appeared at Probate Court and gave his account to the Court's satisfaction. On Nov. 8, 1704 Moses Crafts, Attorney to Jonathan Goodrich, cited Daniel to again appear and render an account of his administration, but as Daniel had already rendered an account satisfactory to the Court he was not required to appear again or render another account of his administration. On Dec. 3, 1691 Jonathan married Abigail Crafts, daughter of Moses Crafts and Rebecca Gardner, born circa 1676 likely at Deerfield, Mass. There is no record of when Abigail died, but may have been after daughter Rebecca's Wethersfield baptism on Dec. 24, 1701. Jonathan was living on July 15, 1742 when he conveyed his Wethersfield homestead and other lands to his "dutiful son" Jonathan, Jr. No subsequent date of Jonathan's death is of record and there is no known gravestone. The children of Jonathan Goodrich and Abigail Crafts, all born of record at Wethersfield, are: • i. Jonathan, Jr., b. Feb. 9, 1692/93, d. testate of record at Wethersfield July 7, 1772 having written his will June 10, 1772 and exhibited Aug. 24, 1772. Jonathan m. Nov. 27, 1740 at Wethersfield (by Rev. James Lockwood), Sarah Steele, widow of Daniel Steele, and dau. of John Howard and second wife Margaret Stebbins, b. of record at Wethersfield Nov. 20, 1705. She d. at Wethersfield Sept. 18, 1775. In 1899 neither Jonathan nor Sarah had known gravestones. Three children of the family but only two were living when Jonathan wrote his will. • ii. Abigail, b. Nov. 28, 1694, d. Aug. 8, 1776 at Lenox, Mass., Æ 82 (g.s.) Abigail m. (1) Jan. 2, 1717/18 at Wethersfield (by Rev. Stephen Mix) her first cousin, Capt. Samuel Wright 3rd, s. of Sgt. Samuel Wright, Jr. and Rebecca Crafts (the sister of Abigail's mother), b. of record at Wethersfield Jan. 6, 1692/93. Samuel was a mariner and d. intestate at sea June 6, 1732. Five children of the family. Abigail m. (2) before July 7, 1741 as his only known wife, Noadiah Dickinson, s. of Sgt. Obadiah Dickinson and Mehitable Hinsdale, b. of record at Wethersfield Aug. 2, 1694. He d. intestate at Wethersfield June 3, 1745, Æ 52 (g.s.) No children of the second marriage. • iii. Moses, b. July 19, 1697, d. of record Apr. 30, 1785 at Bolton, Conn., Æ 88 (g.s.) Moses m. an unidentified Hannah, who d. July 8, 1793 at Bolton, Æ 94 yrs. and 10 mos. (g.s.) Six children of the family including eldest son Crafts Goodrich. • iv. Lucy, b. Sept. 9 (bapt. Sept. 17), 1699, d. July 21, 1739 at Willington, Conn., Æ 40 but has no known g.s. Lucy m. Aug. 7, 1723 at Wethersfield (by Rev. Stephen Mix) as his first wife, Rev. Daniel Fuller, s. of Thomas Fuller, Jr. and Esther Fisher, b. of record Apr. 20, 1699 at Dedham, Mass. (Daniel's immigrant Dedham grandfather, Lieut. Thomas Fuller, was of the extended Fuller family of Redenhall, co. Norfolk, England as Edward and Dr. Samuel Fuller, passengers in 1620 of the Mayflower and founding of the Plymouth Colony.) Lucy and Daniel had six children, 3 at Wethersfield and 3 at Willington. Daniel m. (2) of record at Willington Oct. 26, 1742, Mary Edgerton, by whom he four additional children. He d. testate at Willington of small pox Dec. 6, 1758, Æ 60 (g.s.) • v. Rebecca, bapt.
