A very tragic incident happened in the death of Jonathan Higgins of Horning's Mills, last Tuesday evening, Nov. 23rd. For the past year or two he had not been in his usual health, but being now and then under the doctor's care it was hoped that he would have attained his usual soundness of body, but the sad event came very unexpectedly on the aforesaid date. On the afternoon of the day in question he had been engaged in some labor on his lot, and as the evening drew near, he had occasion to retire to his house to prepare his usual repast, when he was fatally stricken. He was found prostrate on the floor in the evening of the following day. Mr Johnathon Higgins was born in Vaughan Township, York County, on March 2nd 1855, being thus in his seventy-second year he was a son of the late Thos. Higgins, who with his family, moved from Vaughan Township to reside at lot 20, con. 4, Melancthon Township, residing there till 1892, when he retired from farming to live a quiet life in Horning's Mills. He was an exceptional character, in that he was quiet and unassuming which characteristic made him admired by the older people as well as the young. Not gifted, like some, with the extraordinary talent of cultivating one's self educationally, he had a spirit of accommodation to be kind and courteous to those with whom he came in contact. It can be truly said that his was a familiar figure in this village, and everybody was eager to greet him with a kind word as well as to receive one from him in return. He had few enemies for he believed in the good old maxim of "How to get rid of an enemy" that is "Make him your friend." Those who remain to mourn his loss are his sisters: Mrs Colin Cameron, Thistletown, near Weston; Mrs R Wrigglesworth, Toronto; Mrs Richard Harrison, Shelburne; Mrs Peter Jordan, Brampton; Mrs Richard Davison, Pelly, Sask.; Mrs Edward Newton, Horning's Mills and one brother, Mr Jas. Higgins, Toronto.
