At the time of his marriage, he was working for the Manitowoc Northern Traction Co., as a conductor. Two months later he went to work for the power station as an engineer. He stayed there for two years, then went to work for the Smalley Mfg. Co, as chief engineer. After 2 years, he resigned due to poor health and moved to Grinnell, IA. In Grinnell he worked for the Spaulding Mfg. Co. as a pattern maker. Built family home at 827 Princeton St., Grinnell, IA. It has been stated that he built a plane in conjunction with Grinnell pioneer aviator, Billy Robinson around 1912. Robinson's airfield was located on west 11th Avenue in Grinnell. Funeral services for J. L. Hockett were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the United Presbyterian church conducted by the Rev. W. J. Stewart. A mixed quartet composed of Paul and Jane Huff, Donald and Anna May Schooley, with Mrs. Chase R. McPherson at the piano, sang, "It Won't Be Long, It May Be Soon," "Goodness and Mercy," and "God Giveth His Beloved Sleep." Pall bearers were T. H. McIlrath, Wm. Hamilton, D. Birchard, Herbert Hutchison, Hugh Sanders and Archie McBlain. Miss Bertha Pearson and Mrs. William Hamilton were in charge of the flowers. Interment was in the family lot in Ivy Hill Cemetery at Malcom. Jonathan Lanford Hockett, son of Eli and Hannah Cook Hockett, was born January 16, 1872, in Grant county, Indiana, and passed away Sunday afternoon, March 8, 1936, at 3:30 o'clock at his home at 827 Prince Street, Grinnell, Iowa. At the time of his death he was 64 years, one month and 21 days of age. When he was a small boy the family moved to Valton, Wisconsin where he grew to manhood. When he was eighteen years of age he went to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where he worked during the summers at a stone quarry and during the winters in a lumber camp. After a few years he secured a position as conductor on the street car line of the Northern Traction Company at Manitowoc. After a short time he was promoted to the position of engineer which he held for two years resigning to accept a position as chief engineer with the Smalley Mfg. Company. At Manitowoc he met and married Miss Bertha Wehausen on June 8, 1904. To this union five children were born all of whom survive. After two years with the Smalley Manufacturing Company Mr. Hockett resigned due to failing health and the family moved to Grinnell, Iowa, in 1909 which has been the family home since. During his residence in Grinnell Mr. Hockett was employed as pattern maker at the Spaulding Manufacturing Company until that company dissolved. In later years he had been a carpenter and painter. He was a birthright member of the Maple Run Friends church near Marion, Indiana. When the family moved to Grinnell he united with the United Presbyterian of which he has been a faithful member, serving that congregation for 20 years as elder. He was also Assistant Treasurer at the time of his death. Surviving him are his wife and five children, Mrs. John Ohland and Howard Hockett of Malcom,Norman Hockett, Mrs. Lloyd Gilbert and Bernice Hockett of Grinnell; one grandson, Paul Ohland, of Malcom, four brothers, Arthur of Portsmouth, Virginia, Albert of Grinnell, Iowa, Ottway of Thompson, Illinois, Charles of Albion, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Cook of Wheeler, Oregon. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister, his oldest brother, Josiah, having passed away on the same day one year ago. He was a faithful husband, a kind father and a good neighbor. He was honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellow men and will be greatly missed by his family as well as a large circle of relatives and friends to whom he had endeared himself.
