Description	:	Jonathan A. "Jake" Sharp, 77, a 39-year resident of Cashmere, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 16, 1999 in Central Washington Hospital. He was born on Feb. 11, 1922 to Rex W. and Martha (Haley) Sharp in a sod farm house near Sparks. "Jake" Sharp, 77, a 39-year resident of Cashmere, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 16, 1999 in Central Washington Hospital. He was born on Feb. 11, 1922 to Rex W. and Martha (Haley) Sharp in a sod farm house near Sparks. He grew up there and in Tripp County, S.D. where he attended the Beaver Creek and Roberts one-room school houses. He often rode his Shetland pony, Silver, to school. During the winter, he would ice skate on the family farm until 1944 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theatre and following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to the Millboro, S.D. area. On Feb. 11, 1947, he married Inez V. Davis at Valentine and they made their home in Millboro, later moving to Hot Springs and Martin, S.D. Soon after he worked on a cattle ranch southeast of Valentine. In 1952 they moved to Cashmere where he worked for the Cashmere Fruit Exchange and in the Texaco station with Orville Roller. In 1954 they moved to Custer, S.D., and later to Hot Springs, where he operated a Texaco Station and was employed by the Veterans Administration Center. In 1962, they returned to Cashmere where he worked for Vale Warehouse and Bev Spears Construction. In 1966, he was employed by the City of Cashmere where he worked for the street and maintenance departments until his retirement in 1966. As a boy, his uncle, Arlie Mahaffa, taught him how to trap, hunt and fish on the Keya Paha and Niobrara Rivers. His love of husting (sic) and fishing and the outdoors stayed with him his whole life and he passed on that love to his son and grandsons. Jake was good at fixing things. He liked to feed the quail, watch things grow and visit with people. He never met a stranger. He loved his garden and raising all kinds of vegetables. He also grew grapes and lots of beautiful flowers. He loved baseball and played on the Haley Grandsons team as a young man. He was a member of the American Legion Post #64 in Cashmere. Jake is survived by his wife, Inez of the family home, son and daughter-in-law, James and Kathy Sharp of East Wenatchee; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Larry Keller of Mukilteo and Devera Sharp and Jack Johnson of Peshastin. Jake grew up in a big, loving family, being the third child of 10. His surviving sisters are Gladys Haas of Valentine and Martha Wergin of Claremore, Okla. His surviving brothers are Rex Sharp, Jr. of Hot Springs, S.D., Kenneth Sharp of Valentine, Ron Sharp of Belle Plaine, Kan., and Bob Sharp of Fremont. Jake loved all children and had six grandchildren of his own, Chris, Matt and Dennis Sharp, Ginny Keller, Jake and Hart Johnson and two great grandchildren, Jeremiah and Ashley Sharp. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lyle Sharp and one sister, Lola Kaplan. He was a strong but gentle man with a lot of knowledge about life that couldn't be found in books. We all learned from him. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 20 with Pastor Tim Wilbur officiating. Concluding service and interment followed in the Peshastin Cemetery with American Legion Post #64 participating. The Cold Mountain Drummers also performed a special ceremony for Jake. Memorials may be made in his name to the Heart Fund, American Lung Association or the Charity of one's choice. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth is in charge of the Arrangements.
