The following is an excerpt from"The History of Clinchco: In 1778.twenty-two years after the Revolutionary War,Virginia entered the Union as the 10th state.It was customary in those days to grant large bountaries of land to individuals for settlement.Richard Smith recieved land patents for some 300,000 acres of land in this area from the state of Virginia in the 1780's and 1790's. Smith was a wealthy merchant and absentee land owner.In 1806 he conveyed 348,724 acres of land to a group Philadelphia businessmen,consisting of John Warder,Jeremiah Warder,and John Head Warder for a sum of $12,000.The boundary of the land ran from the Clinch River in RussellCounty to the headwters of Contrary Creek in Buchanan County,encompassing most of what is now Dickenson County. Sale of the warder lands began in 1850,and it was that year that Jonthan W. "John or Shaun" Wright secured deed from the Warders for 360 acres of land,which included and surrounded ll of the present town of Clinchco. He built a one room log home in the area of Clincho now known as "Back Row".The Old house fork of Mill Creek was named for Wright's house. In 1879 Noah Sykes purchase 853 acres of land from John Wright's son,William B Wright.Sykes moved his family to Chincho from Russell County,where they added rooms to the old log "Wright" house,and raised their family there.Noah,and his wife Susan J (Arrington) Sykes are both buried in the Graveyard Hill Cemetery in Clincho on the hill which stood behide their home.Sykes brought the first industry to Clincho in the form of a water powered grist mill.The Sykes mill stood in the area of town known as the brick Flats. Clincho remained a sparsely settled place until 1915 when the Clincho Railroad was built through the area from Spartanburg,South Carolina to Elkhorn City,Kentucky.As late as 1913 there was only 18 residences in the vicinity of Clincho.The early pioneer families simply called the settlement "The Mouth of Mill Creek" Later,the Clinchfield Railroad located a flagstop at Clincho which as called Moss after one of the railroad contractors who worked in the area.And so Clincho was known as the town of "Moss" for sometime.Eventually post office was established in the growing town in 1917.The Post Office was named Clincho,in honor of the Clinchfield Coal Corporation,which had begun mining operations in the town,and had made their first shipment of coal from Clincho in that year. Jonathan and Polly are listed in the 1820 Census of Burke County,North Carolina living next door to his father Solomon Wright.They moved to Virginia around 1820 stopped one year at Guest Station(Coeburn MM) around 1836,then moved to below Clintwood.In 1850 he purchased several thousand acres in the Clincho area making him the first settlers there.His land holding showed a value of $4000. Jonathan W. and Polly appear on the 1850 Census of Russell County,Virginia living next door to their son Aaron.Their following children are also listed: John B 19yrs, Solomon H 17yrs, Thomas J 14yrs, Jasper 12yrs, Waitsel 10 yrs. All are listed as born in North Carolina 1860 United State Federal Virginia Buchanan Jonathan Wright 59 yrs old Wife Mary 60 yrs old Son Thomas 23 yrs old 1870 United State Federal Virginia Buchanan Sand Lick Wright J.W. 69 yrs old Wife Mary 70 yrs old Jonathan married Mary Jane (Polly) Bailey,daughter of William "Billy" Bailey and Elizabeth McMullen,before 1820 in Burke,Yancey County,North Carolina. Mary was born in 1798 in Yancey County,North Carolina,died on 15 Nov 1883 in Dickenson County,Virginia at age 85,and was buried in John Kerr Cem.,Dickenson County,Virginia.
