Usted to come visit Grandma Henjum. 2. Arnt: (Also called Ole). Served in the Spanish-American War. Was unmarried. Died from Tuberculosis after the war. Buried at East Nidaros in an unmarked grave. 3. Carl: Not much information available on him. He is believed to have lived in Denver, died and was buried there. 4. Marit: Married a Stageberg and lived and died near Baltic, S.D. Children--sons Arthur, Oscar and Joseph. Daughters Bertha (Hilmoe), Marie, Mable and one who marriad a Sheriff Ingvald from Flandreau. 5. Jonetta: The subject of this biography. 6. Mamie: Married Ray Parriott, a plumber. Moved to Denver. They had no children. Mamie died in 1942 and is buried in Denver. They used to correspond with Julie, the husband doing the writing. Their address in Denver was 7210 S. Race. 7. Olena: Mamie's twin. Had one daughter, Gina. Olena died in childbirth and is buried at Nidaros in an unmarked grave. Grandma Myrmo took care of Gina as long as she was able and then Mamie came oand took her to Denver with her. 8. Anna: (Also called Inga). Moved to Denver when Mamie did. She was married twice but had no children. Died in 1941 and is buried in Denver. One of her husbands was in mining. The traveled a lot and he left her quite a bit of money. 9. Daughter: First name unknown. She was married to an Evenson. Had two sons, Ed and Oscar, and one daughter, Gina. She died of Tuberculosis and is buried at Winger, Minnesota. Martha (Henjum) Brown lived close to two of her sons at Fertile and Gary, Minnesota. Jonetta Myrmo was born near Trondheim, Norway, on June 15, 1872, the daughter of Ole and Inga Myrmo. All of her brothers and sisters were also born there. In 1887, at the age of 15, she and her 13 year old twin sisters, Mamie and Olena, left there homeland to seek a new life in America. They came by steerage and were on the ocean six weeks. It was an extremely rough voyage and many died and were buried at sea. Her passage over was paid for by a family who lived near Baltic, South Dakota, with the condition that she work for them for one year as a bonded servant. They names are not known, but she soemtimes spoke of the long hours and hard work they demanded of her and how, at the end of the year, they turned her out with no money and just her personal belongings to be on her own. The twins stayed with the Stagebergs for a time and then they, too, went to work. With all of the children working and saving their money, they were eventually albe to provide passage money for their parents to come to America, too. A year or two later, probably around 1890, she married Nels N. Nelson, a widower with one son, Bennie. they lived on a farm five miles west of Sherman, South Dakota. The farm had been purchsed from a man named Hans Berg, who had homesteaded it. It was a beautiful farm home, with a big while house, a red barn and granary and other buildings. The house consisted of a kitchen, dining room, 2 living rooms and a bedroom down stairs and 6 bedroom upstairs. There was a large orchard with many varities of apples and plums and a pond wich provided excellent skating in the wintertime. All of their ten children, 5 sons and 5 daughter, were born here. Here, too, on March 26, 1910, Nels died from pneumonia, leaving Jonetta a widow of 38, with 10 children (the youngest not born yet) to raise. The family remained on the farm, with the oldest son, Oscar, taking over the responsibilities as head of the family. He was just 14 years old at the time. In addition to the land at the home place, they also rented a quarter of land 2 miles north and 1/2 mile west of there. This arrangement continued until 1927 when Oscar moved with his family to Sherman, South Dakota. Jonetta and the younger children remained on the farm for several more years and then she sold the farm and moved to Sherman, too. She continued to live there until she passed away on November 20, 1943. She was called 'Grandma Henjum' by almost everyone who knew her and was a very special person to the people of the community. She looked like everyone's picutre of a 'Grandma'--short and plump, with long white hair which he braided and coiled into a know in the back. She was the official 'tooth-puller' for the youngsters in the neighborhood. Whenever a baby tooth got loose, they would walk over to "Grandma Henjum's', have er perform her dental duties, sample some of her homemade cookies, then walk back home, looking forward to the next trip to the dentist! And many a new baby was welcomed into this world with a bowl of her special Norwegian sweet soup. It was the custom that while the new mother was still in bed that all the neighbor women would bring lunch and come to see the baby. Any number of delicacies might be brought, but there had to be Sweet Soup. Always a devout Lutheran, she was a good anf faithful member of Norway Lutheran Church. All of her 10 children were baptized and confirmed there and she was active inthe work of the Ladies' Aid. During the last 8 years of her life, she was bedridden and was cared for my her children--most of the time by Julie and for a time by Abe and his wife. During these years, her birthday became somewhat of a community affair, with well-wishers coming from miles around, bringing food, gifts and cards. Sometimes the visitors would keep coming for several days. At one birthday, she received well over 100 cards and letters. She enjoyed seeing all of them and talking with them. Her mind was clear and bright and her memory good to the very end. She could tell fascinating stories about her early years in Norway--about the beauty of the country and of how she and her younger sister would go up into the mountains every spring to heard the sheep and goats through the summer. Other members of the family would come up periodically to check on them and to bring them food, mostly cheese and dried meats. The only way they could find them was to follow the trail of the sheep droppings up the mountains. At the end of the summer, someone would come up to help them heard the animals back down before the winter snows bwegan. She spole of her mixed feelings at leaving Norway, sadness at saying good-bye to her parents and family, not knowing if she would ever see them again, yet eager to see the new world. And she always had stories about the small bands of Indians who still camped along the river at Baltic when she arrived there. As has been said before, she passed away in her home at Sherman on November 20, 1943, and was buried at Norway Cemetery beside her husband." Oscar Norman: Born 1896. Married Lillian Hustead and had Orpha, Donald, Ruth, Robert, Keith and Bonnie. Nora Jontinka: Born 1898. Married John Royce and had Maxine and Franklin. Albin Joseph: Born 1900 and married Irma Fuerhelm. They had no children. Alice Selma: Born 1902. Married Otto Rudd. They had no children. Melvin Oliver: Born 1904. Married Mildred Kapaun and had Gerald, James, Dorothy, Patricia and Larry. Neil Eugene: Born 1906. Married Edna Holling and had David. Julie Marie: Born 1908. Married Lowell Eyer and had Lowell Jr. and Julie Kay. Nels Justine (Paul): Born 1910. Married a lady named Julie and had Mary, Rita, Sandra and "Butch."
