His final proud words were about his love of the family ranch and his wonderful grandkids. Born the third child of Harry W. and Frances E. Allen on Sept. 5, 1939. Joe lived his entire life on the 100 year-old Allen Ranch near Roberts, where he and his partner/ brother Jim raised Hereford cattle and produced thousands of tons of hay annually. Respected for his knowledge, common sense and work ethic, he was a valued employee at Cenex and Exxon refineries, working as a ‘temp’ between calving and haying seasons for nearly half a century. Later on in retirement, Joe helped deliver fertilizer in order to stay busy and “see the country” for his younger buddies. Joe proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1964, where he perfected his skills as a welder. In later years he shared with others through the Roberts Cemetery Board, American Legion Post #17, Knights of Columbus, water-users boards and parish council of his church. After helping care for his ailing brother Jim and sister-in-law Faye during their final years, he volunteered to work with Beartooth Hospice as a volunteer which was very important to him. Throughout his life, Joe remained loyal to what mattered most to him: family, church and community. In 1970 he married Mary L. Hailstone and treasured their children Erika and Tyler, who completed the family. A graduate of Roberts High School, Joe was proud that Erika and Ty also graduated RHS and his eight grandchildren would also follow in his path. Joe’s unconditional love for the ‘kids’ in his life stretched to include his own kids and grandkids and all of their friends. His love of reading made him a favorite baby-sitter with the grandkids, while he shared his music, faith, work ethic, support and encouragement with all of them. Some things that made Joe especially happy were good books, good steaks with tons of pepper, warm summer days, family holidays and traditions, polka music, patriotic marches, traveling and driving the back-roads, fishing with family and friends, music concerts and plays, and always the 4th of July Home of Champions Rodeos and parades. Surviving family include his wife, daughter Erika (James) Binando and grandchildren, Bailey, Brooke, Blake and Burke Binando; son Tyler (Lindy) and grandchildren Maddisyn, Joe, Tony and Christian Allen; nephews, nieces, extensive family and friends and all who will miss his friendly wave as they pass by the Allen Ranch. Preceding Joe in death are his parents, sister Mary I. Black, brother Jim and sister-in-law Faye. Interment with military honors at the Roberts Cemetery. Source: Billings Gazette
