Description	:	Joseph A. Guenther, 84, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Most Rev. R. Walker Nickless, bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City; Mr. Guenther's son, the Rev. Daniel Guenther; the Rev. Walker Nickless, bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City; Mr. Guenther's son, the Rev. Daniel Guenther; the Rev. Michael Erpeding and other priests from the diocese will concelebrate the Mass, along with Mr. Guenther's nephew, the Rev. Deacon Paul Dreismeier. Visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the rosary recited by the Catholic Daughters of America at 6 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Sunday, all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. The burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. Joseph was born on Jan. 18, 1927, in Crofton, Neb., the son of Ferdinand and Mary (Foxhoven) Guenther. He grew up and attended schools in the Crofton area. He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and served during World War II in Japan. He farmed for a few years before his wedding to Hilaria Wuebben on April 10, 1951. Hilaria died June 13, 1983, in Sioux City. Joseph married Marcie Miller on May 1, 1993, in Sioux City. Joseph and Hilaria farmed in the Crofton area until coming to Sioux City in 1954. He was a TV technician for Gibson Home Appliance for many years. He was a longtime member of St. Boniface Church and was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in South Sioux City. Joseph took great pride in his family and enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Sun Valley Golf Course. Survivors include his wife Marcie of Sioux City; five children, Ralph Guenther and his wife Jenise of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Louise Guenther of Galena, Ohio, the Rev. Daniel Guenther of Sioux City, Joan Dobmeier and her husband Terry of Omaha, Neb., David Guenther and his wife Leslie of Benbrook, Texas; two stepdaughters, Charlotte Mulheron and her husband Garry of Burbank, S.D., and Cheryl Hutchinson and her husband Robert of Sioux City; two sisters, Anne Wortmann and Roseline Burbach and her husband Roman, all of Hartington Neb.; a brother, Albert Guenther and his wife Janice of Norwalk, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Andrew, Tara, Angela, Nicole, Joshua and Sarah; eight stepgrandchildren, Heath, Kristina, Colleen, Kate, Jennifer, Robert, Marcy and Cherice; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents; his first wife Hilaria; three brothers, Fritz, John and Clarence; three sisters, Catherine Dreismeier, Elizabeth Hames and Mary Steffen. Pallbearers will be Josh Guenther, Roger Wortmann, Ed Steffen, Jerry Hames, Ken Guenther and Richard Mohrhauser. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Boniface Cathoic Church, Hospice of Siouxland or Holy Spirit Retirement home.
