Harris was born in Boone county, Indiana, March 16th, 1862, and died at his home a few miles north of Walworth, Custer county, Nebraska, April 26th, 1923, at the age of 61 years 1 month and 10 days. Joseph A . Harris was the son of Aaron and Elizabeth (Winkoop)Harris, natives of Ohio. Aaron Harris was a farmer all his life. During the Civil War, June, 1862, he enlisted in the Union Army but only served three months, being discharged because of injuries, from which he died before he could reach home. Joseph Harris was the youngest of a family of thirteen children, only one of whom survives, a sister living in Pasadena, California. Mr. Harris received his education in district schools of Boone county, Indiana, at the same time doing whatever his hands found to do. There's always plenty to do in a large family. At the time he was nineteen years of age he came with his mother to Custer county, Nebraska, and located on a homestead several miles north of the present town of Walworth. There he lived for a period of nine years. September 23rd, 1890, Mr. Harris was united in marriage with Miss Louisa M. Long at Taylor, Loup county, Nebraska. Miss Long had come to Custer county the fall of 1884 with her mother Mrs, Susannah Long and two brothers and two sisters— Jim, Patterson, Mattie and Emma Long. The first named brother was married, at the time he came here and on account of the ill-health of his wife, he returned to Indiana with her in 1886. The mother and son Patterson and two of the daughters each homesteaded land several miles north of Walworth. Miss Louisa Long managed to get her land somewhat improved with money made by working, making three trips to Boone county, Nebraska, in an old-fashioned buckboard, for that purpose. Later she secured work at a hotel, the famous Marble Top. Having saved her home stead in this way, she and Mr. Harris began housekeeping on it, and that has been their home ever since, a period of thirty three years nearly. People, who managed to save their homesteads during the pioneer days and the period of drouth years in this way, were bound to prosper when better times came and Mr. and Mrs. Harris were of this type. By the year 1919 they had accumulated 1,120 acres of land most of which is in pasture and well stocked. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Harris Aaron, who is married and lives in one of his parents farms and James (Jim) who is single and lives at home. One of Mrs. Harris's sisters, Emma, married John Stephenson of Broken Bow. She died in February, 1901, leaving a small daughter, Susie Stephenson, and Mr. and Mrs. Harris took her and raised her as if she was their own daughter. She was married a year or more ago to Loren Carter and they Iive in Cummings Park. Joseph Harris was a kind husband, a loving father, an accommodating neighbor and a good citizen always. Mr. Harris had enjoyed good health until a year or two ago when diabetes secured a stronghold on him and he gradually yielded to its inroads, until he succumbed to it Thursday morning, April 26, 1923. The funeral was held Friday, April 27th, at the home. Rev. M. M. Long, pastor of the Sargent M. E. Church conducted the services.
