Description	:	Joe McDougald was a farmer, owning 75 acres immediately adjacent to the cemetery he rests in now. While the majority of the acreage was potatoes, he also had fields for hay (used to feed the animals) and a large field of mixed vegetables (used to feed his family)! For many years, Joe plowed the field with a blade pulled behind a single horse, which he drove while walking behind. Eventually, he used a ride on blade, towed by two horses! Real progress! Joe was also a Kennebec County Sheriff's Deputy, serving the community in so many ways. He served as Grange President for multiple years and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Few if any in Readfield didn't know him from one facet of his life or another. Most Saturday nights were spent at the Manchester Depot-which, of course was originally a train depot, turned dance hall. Joe would direct traffic at opening and closing, and in between, he'd enjoy the live Polka music and dancing. He was married only once, to Nina Mae Kennedy. They had five children: Frank, Earnald, Holson, Velma & Errie.
