Read More	From the Spearville Centennial DEMMING Joseph Anthony Demming was born May 2, 1853 to Franz and Elizabeth Wigger Demming in (Suedlohn or Westhpalia) Germany. in 1871, at the young age of 18 years he, along with his older sister Christine, came to the United States. They settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. His sister married Henry Hessler and remained in Cincinnati. In the fall of 1877, Joe as a member of a twelve man team, came to Kansas to complete a land deal for the Aurora Colonization Society. On February 24, 1878, he returned along with a colony of German Catholic settlers to Windthorst. He filed a claim south of Windthorst but did not stay long. He went to Chicago, Illinois, to seek his fortune as a glider. But the West and the friends he made there were hard to forget and he soon returned. This time he purchased a relinquishment on a claim a half mile north and one and one half mile west of Windthorst. On April 29, 1889, he married Mary Margaret Schawe. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, September 22, 1866, and moved to this community with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schawe, when she was twelve years old. To this union three children were born: Katheryn on January 24, 1891; Frederick on October 19, 1892; and Anna on February 4, 1895. Joseph and Mary Demming spent their entire life together on the farm he homesteaded and worked. The house now standing was built around 1903--the second home built on that site. Joe died May 19, 1929, at the age of 76 years and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. His wife, Mary, died a year later in 1930 at the age of 63 and was buried along side of her husband. Their only son, Fred, and their older daughter, Katie, lived with and cared for their parents until the parents death. They then continued to make the farm their home until January, 1953, when they moved into Spearville. Fred died suddenly of a heart attack on May 8, 1953. He, too, is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. Katie continues to live in Spearville. Anna, Joseph and Mary Demming's youngest daughter, married George Heskamp on September 28, 1915. They had lived for a few short years away from this area but returned to stay in 1926 when George went into the implement business. There were seven children born to George and Anna heskamp. They are Raymond, Spearville; Leonard, Sublette; Carl, deceased; Marianna Sander, Dodge City; Erma Vierthaler, Spearville; Eloise Hoffman, Colorado Springs; and George Jr., Spearville.
