Description	:	Joseph Augustus "Joe" Miller, 86, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at his home after a brief illness. Born in and a lifelong resident of Polk County, he was the son of the late Osborn and Ethel Arledge Miller. A veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II, Mr. Miller was retired from Duke Power Company after 36 years of service. He was a member of Green River Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and chairman of the cemetery committee. Born in and a lifelong resident of Polk County, he was the son of the late Osborn and Ethel Arledge Miller. A veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II, Mr. Miller was retired from Duke Power Company after 36 years of service. He was a member of Green River Baptist Church in Rutherfordton, where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and chairman of the cemetery committee. He was also a member of Sunny View Ruritan Club and served as its first president. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Beryl (Davidson) Miller; one son, Barry A. Miller of Raleigh; one sister, Grace Miller Swain of Inman; one brother, Hugh A. Miller of Green Creek; two grandchildren, Angie Miller of Columbus, and Adrian Miller of Fernadina Beach, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Ian Miller, Rachel Miller and Catherine Miller; three nieces; and four nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Yates A. Miller. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 4, 2002, in Green River Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Curtis officiating. Mr. Miller was placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Burial with military rites by Fort Bragg Casualty Office, Fort Bragg, was be in the Green River Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2002 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel. McFarland Funeral Chapel Tryon, North Carolina
