His many friends in New Vienna and Dyersville vicinity were stricken with sorrow Friday morning when it became known that Ex-mayor Joseph Vorwald had passed away at his home in New Vienna the night before at 11:30 o'clock. Death claimed him after a long period of illness. Deceased was born at New Vienna on Nov. 27, 1878, as the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Vorwald and he was nearly 59 years of age. He received his education in the rural and St. Boniface schools and grew to manhood there. Mr. Vorwald was a very influential business man and always took an active part in civic affairs. For 18 years he served on the Council and was Mayor four years of New Vienna. He was a member of the council ever since the death of his father, until last year. He served the people faithfully. Deceased was a staunch Catholic and always adhered strictly to the teachings of his faith and was well prepared with its last rites when death claimed him. His character was above reproach and he was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Mr. Vorwald is survived by four sisters, Frances and Mary both at home, Lizzie, Mrs. John T. Meyer of South Sioux City and Anna, Mrs. Otto Kerper of New Vienna. Four Brothers also survive, they are Frank of Eugene, Texas, Fred Harry and George all of New Vienna. Several nephews and nieces are among the survivors. The funeral took place Monday morning at 9 o'clock from his late home to St. Boniface church where requiem high mass was sung for the repose of his soul be Rev. Father Reinert after which his remains were laid to rest in the family lot in St. Boniface cemetery. The pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased; Messrs. John Kerper, Jerry Meyer, Alfred Vorwald, Gregor Vorwald, Arthur Kerper and Albert Kerper. The honorary pallbearers were Messrs, Frank Retting, Elmer Heying, Cletus Klostermann, Oscar Fischer, Emil Ploesl and Gilbert Steffen. Among the relatives present at the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. John T. Meyers, sons Raymond and Harry of South Sioux City, Neb. Mrs. Bernadine FAngmann, daughter Gunilda and sons John and Louis, Mrs. John Moser and daughter Betty Jean of Raeville, Neb., Mrs. Anna C. Fangmann, daughter Louise and Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Fangmann of Nashua, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Vorwald and Mr. and Mrs. Julius Vorwald of Bloomington, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heiring of Farley, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Vorwald, Dyersville; Mr. Norbert Vorwald and son Bobby and daughter Eileen, Holy Cross, Miss Mary Kerper of Spencer, Dr. and Mrs. Theo Vorwald and daughter Loretta of Dubuque, Atty and Mrs. E. H. Willging and daughter Margaret and son Lawrence of Dubuque, Dr. and Mrs. F. X. Lange and daughter Irene and Florence of Dubuque, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Boeckenstedt, daughter Bernice and son Henry of Petersburg, the Misses Rose and Anna Boeckenstedt of Dyersville, Mr. and Mrs. Clem Boeckenstedt and son Chas. Of Petersburg and John Vorwald of Farley.
