Holmes and Firman, Major Montgomery, Capts. Walton, Craig and Lloyd. Engaged in scouting parties and in guarding the points and shores of New Jersey, never out of the State of New Jersey. In several Skirmishes with the Tories and refugees. Served as mounted guard at Monmouth Courthhouse, Colt Neck and Middletown, New Jersey. "He sustains a good character for truth" Two years after the Revolutionary War they moved to Montgomery County, New York and then to Butler County, Ohio in 1805. Pension August 1, 1832 at Butler County, Ohio and received $96.00 per annum. Joseph and wife, Jane (Van Cleave) Baird were buried on their homestead. There are two Memorial markers for him, one at Jacksonburg Township Cemetery, on Rte 122 on the north side of the road just before going into Jacksonburg, and before the Methodist Cemetery, another at Woodhill Cemetery, Franklin, OH. Jane Van Cleave Baird applied for Josephs Rev. War Pension but died before it was granted to her. The children, John and Jane, brought action to the courts to receive the monies for arrears caused by delay due their mother. While the papers stated she was to receive $80.00 per annum commencing 4th March 1848, there was no notice that the children received the money. She died at the age of 85 and was buried next to her husband on the homestead near Jacksonburg, OH Their children: John, Benjamin, Anna, Mary Jane, Benjamin, Cornelius, Arthur, Andrew, James and Jane.
