Joseph Baumert, born in the Aloys neighborhood in Cuming county, on the twentieth of December, 1870, died at his home five miles northwest of town, on September thirtieth. He had not been in the best of health for some years preceding his death, and medical skill and tender care could not prevent the end, for his ailment, nephritis, coupled with a weak heart, caused his physical powers to fail. He was the oldest child of a family of six sons and three daughters, of whom Fred, Frank and Henry Baumert, Mrs. Frank Eusterbrock and Mrs. Anton Wiese live in this community, and Will and John Baumert and Mrs. John Dinslage still reside in the Aloys neighborhood. When the deceased had attained the age of seventeen years his father died and in a large measure, having been the oldest, the responsibilities and the cares of the farm fell upon his shoulders; two years later the mother was called, which added to the burden, although shared by the older sister and brother, and it is little wonder that they all had more than ordinary sisterly and brotherly love for him whose death they sincerely mourn; they appreciated his true worth – his faithfulness, his kindly disposition and his generous nature. In those days he had the strength and the courage to withstand the responsibilities and by continued labor and careful management the family remained prosperous. Seventeen years ago last month he was married to Miss Agnes Steffensmeier, who, with three daughters, Mary, Katie and Lizzie ,and one son, Louis, survives him. He has lived in this community the past fourteen years, a part of the time on a farm he owned adjoining town on the south, and was one of the most industrious, thrifty and prosperous farmers of this locality. He was a devout attendant at SS. Peter and Paul's church, and was recognized far and wide as a man of integrity whose word was as good as his bond, of thrift that reached out a hand of helpfulness to those about him, and of a type of citizenship that caused him to be held in high esteem. All this was shown by the large attendance at the funeral, which was held on the Saturday following his death, the services having taken place at SS. Peter and Paul's church after the beginning of the last rites at the family home. Rev. A. Brase, his former pastor, came over from Beemer to assist Rev. Pieper in officiating at solemn high mass and in a brief sermon at its close paid tribute to the memory of the deceased. The body was consigned to the grave in the Catholic cemetery east of town and the casket was covered with tokens of love and friendship in the form of many most beautiful flowers. The sympathy of all goes out to the sorrowing family and relatives in the great grief they have been called upon to bear.
