BROCHTRUP PASSED ON. Death Came After Long Illness - Funeral was Tuesday. On Saturday, May 3, at 11:45 p.m., Joseph Brochtrup passed away at his home in David City, death coming after three years of ill health and several months of sickness which made him helpless. Mr. Brochtrup commenced to fail in health after suffering a stroke of paralysis three years ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, May 6, in St. Mary's Catholic church in David City, Rev. Father Boll conducting them. Rev. Father Colleran, of Center, gave the burial service at the grave in the Catholic cemetery in Center. The pallbearers were Joseph Geiger of Ulysses, Frank Kirby, Peter Mysenburg, Nicholas Meysenburg, Arnold Vandenburg and Peter Vanderheiden. Joseph Brochtrup was raised on a farm in Washington county, Wisconsin, the place where he was born September 20, 1854. He came to Butler county in 1878 and located on a farm in Center township, land which he bought. This was his home until 1912, when he moved to David City. Mr. Brochtrup was the oldest of ten children, nine sons and one daughter, of Barnard and Annie Brochtrup. The daughter died four years ago and Joseph Brochtrup, the first born, is the first of the sons to be called home. Two of his brothers, Charles and Theodore, live in Butler county, one, Frank Brochtrup, lives in Greeley, Colo., another, Barnard, in Columbus, Ohio, and four, Henry, John, Herman and William, live in Wisconsin. Mr. Brochtrup was married three times, his first wife being Miss Frances Eiting. A few years after her death in 1884 he was united in marriage to her sister, Miss Lizzie Eiting. On February 12, 1912, he was married to Miss Anna Tierney, who survives him. He also leaves five children and eleven grandchildren. The children all live near David City and they are Barnard and John Brochtrup, children of his first wife, and Miss Josephine Brochtrup, Mrs. Frances Camp and Mrs. Nellie Litjen, children of his second wife. Several years ago, Mr. Brochtrup held office as county supervisor for a few terms. He also held various township offices while living in Center township.
