Description	:	Joseph Brown was born between 1766 and 1770, based on the ages recorded in the 1790-1840 Federal Census records. He is believed to have died between 1846 and the 1850 Census, although his entire road was not enrolled in the 1850 Census. Deeds in Worcester, MA show that Joseph's father was Josiah Brown of Sutton, Worcester, MA. Joseph's mother's name has not been found anywhere. Joseph was one of nine children. Read More	Joseph Brown was born between 1766 and 1770, based on the ages recorded in the 1790-1840 Federal Census records. He is believed to have died between 1846 and the 1850 Census, although his entire road was not enrolled in the 1850 Census. Deeds in Worcester, MA show that Joseph's father was Josiah Brown of Sutton, Worcester, MA. Joseph's mother's name has not been found anywhere. Joseph was one of nine children. No birth records have been located for Joseph and his siblings, nor for any of Joseph's children. This would have been the period leading up to the Revolutionary War, plus church records were often kept and taken by leaving ministers. We did an exhaustive search of records in Worcester County and in several places we were told that the old books could have also been lost to fire or water damage. Joseph's father Josiah was born to Jonas and Hannah (Munroe) Brown in 1711. Jonas and Hannah had moved from Lexington to the Sutton area before Josiah's birth. The family has ties to the Brown, Munroe and Dudley families that were involved in the start of the Revolutionary War in the Lexington, MA area. The John Brown killed on Lexington Green on 19 April 1775 was a first cousin (once removed) to this Joseph Brown. Joseph married his cousin Sally/Sarah (Brown) of Grafton, MA in 1791. Sally's parents were Jonas and Betsey (Dudley) Brown. Joseph and Sally's fathers were brothers, both born to Jonas and Hannah (Munroe) Brown. In the 1800 Census for Sutton Joseph and Sally had 2 sons under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-44, and 1 female over 45. This represents sons Ira & Sarel, Joseph, daughter Hannah, Sarah/Sally, and one of their mothers. Later events revealed that it was Sally's mother Betsey (Dudley) Brown. Land deeds have proven that Joseph moved his family, including his mother-in-law, to Calais, Washington, VT in time to be recorded in the 1810 Census there. Joseph and then later son Ira ran a sawmill near what is now the junction of Joseph Brown Road, West County Road and Dugar Brook Road. In 2017 a group of researchers descended from Joseph and Sally met in Calais to clean stones in Robinson Cemetery, visit the Old West Church (for which Joseph provided lumber) and explore the Calais area. The cellar hole of a home believed to have been built by Joseph was located with the kind help of local volunteer S. M. The farm consisted of a 25 x 25 foot home above the main road, a 25 x 40 foot barn below the road, and an orchard about 50 yards downhill from the road. Many of the rock foundation walls are still visible. It would have been a tough life on the side of a large hill. Based on Hemenway's 1882 Gazetteer story on Calais that appeared in "The Vermont Historical Magazine" Joseph and Sally celebrated being married for 55 years, which takes them both to living in 1846. "Joseph Brown" died at age 82 and "Mrs. Joseph Brown" died at age 77 years. They were the only ones in that town with those names prior to Ms. Hemenway writing her compilation. As neither of their birth years are certain we still have no birth or death dates for either. From the same source, Joseph ran the sawmill in Calais from about 1811 to about 1841. A survey done in 1839 mentions the ending point of the survey at Joseph Brown's barn. A Google Earth search shows the area still looking much the same as it did in 1839, due to the hilly country in Calais. Joseph and Sally (Brown) Brown had children Ira, Hannah, Sarel/Saul, Hosea, Sally and Betsy between 1792 and 1806. All were believed to have been born in Sutton, Worcester, MA. After the family moved to Vermont Hannah married distant cousin Milton Brown and died young in Montpelier. Ira married Polly Lamb and answered a call to the War of 1812 in 1814. Many of their children are known. Sarel married Sybil Pray and died young, leaving a son Jonas and daughter Betsy. Hosea married twice, leaving a large family with his second wife. His first wife Mahala and child Joseph C. Brown died young. The child is often mistaken for his grandfather Joseph, and even the town clerk propagated an error of the child's father on the death record. Daughters Sally and Betsy died young. Sally's death in 1829 is often mistaken for that of her mother's, who was still alive in 1846. Of these people, most are buried in Robinson Cemetery in Calais across several plots owned by Joseph and sons Ira and Hosea. Sarel's son Jonas owned one of the plots. The burial place of Ira and Sarel/Saul, are not certain. Many of the people only have initials on their stones and there are stones with nothing on them at all. There are also several broken off stones that are missing except for the base at ground level.
