He is survived by seven daughters, Mrs. Margaret A Smith, Willow Grove, Pa; Mrs. Fae M Beam, Shingle House, Pa; Mrs. Helen M Waddington, Jenkinstown, Pa; Mrs. Lucille F Poffenberger and Mrs. Barbara B Brechner, both of Hagerstown; Mrs. Lupa C Riedi, Wayne, Pa; and Mrs. Bonnie L Grenier, Branford, Conn; three sons, James E Artz, Boonsboro; Irvin Artz, Halfway; and Robert L Artz, Hagerstown; 24 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport. The Rev Edward E Heydt will officiate. THE FOLLOWING IS THE OBITUARY FOR THEIR SON: Robert Lee "Bob" Artz ROBERT LEE "BOB" ARTZ, 73, of Hagerstown, Md, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born Feb 13, 1941 in Downsville, Md, he was the son of the late Joseph Carson Artz Sr and Minnie Virginia (Ridenour)Artz. Bob, as he was known by all, was an outstanding multisports star in the 1950's. He was a 1959 graduate Of Williamsport High School. Though retired, Bob loved working with people and cultivated long-term relationships with many of his customers over the years. In his past professions, he was a successful small-business owner of R&R Air Systems. He also worked for Younger Toyota and Hoffman Chevrolet, both of Hagerstown, where he received several commendations for customer-service excellence and top sales over the years. Bob also served in the Air National Guard in Martinsburg, W Va, from 1961 to 1967. He was a lifetime member of the Goodwill Athletic Assoc., and the Fraternal order of Eagles Club in Hagerstown. Being a two-time cancer survivor, Bob enjoyed giving back by volunteering with the American Cancer Drive for Life for several years. He enjoyed serving as Washington County elections judge in several local/state primaries. Bob was an avid sports lover and lifetime student of the game. Sports was truly his passion and joy in life. He was a tremendous supporter of women's sports, and advocated on behalf of his daughter in the 1970's to break the gender barrier to ensure she could play baseball and basketball in leagues that only allowed boys to play at that time. He is survived by his daughter, Sheri Lee Artz, Baltimore; mother of his child, Carol E Artz; sisters, Margaret Smith, Abington, Pa; Fae Beam, Shinglehouse, Pa; Barbara Breichner, Hagerstown; and Bonnie Grenier, West Swanzey, NH; brother, James Artz, Williamsport; one grandson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Bradley L Cottrill, brothers, Joseph C Artz Jr and Charles I Artz; and sisters, Lucille F Poffenberger, Lupa Reidi and Helen Waddington. Services on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 10:30 am at Douglas A Fiery Funeral Home, with Chaplain Douglas Hessler officiating.
