Monforte received the sad news by telegraph Monday that his aged father died that morning at his home near Winfield, Kansas. The Chandler News. (Chandler, Okla.), Thursday, December 6, 1900 A Remarkable Career. Captain Joseph Monforte is dead in Cowley county at the great age of 90 years. Captain Monforte’s life more nearly approached the dream of many a callow schoolboy than even the fictitious careers depicted by the novel writers. He ran away to sea from his home in London when but 13 years of age, and for 30 years sailed the oceans of the world. He got command of a ship while still a young man, crossed the Atlantic 47 times, circumnavigated the globe three times, fought three years in the United States navy, was shipwrecked half a dozen times, existed on a desert island on shell fish for a long time, and knew about pirates, slavers, and all that. He was married in 1839 to Miss Martha Volkman, and when she died, he married her sister, Harriett and lived with her more than 60 years. His last wife induced him to leave the sea, and in 1869 he came to Cowley county and settled on a farm, passing the remainder of his days as far from the sea as it would be possible to get. Harriett still survives him at the great age of 92 years, and both were beloved by the community in which they resided. – K.C. Journal. Captain Monforte was the father of J.C. Monforte, of Chandler.
