Armstrong at the home of his son, Ray Armstrong of Lone Fountain, Va. Highland Recorder June 12, 1931 Mr. Joseph E. Armstrong, a former resident of the county, died last Friday at the home of his son Ray, near Lone Fountain, aged 80 years. He is survived by ten children, Clement, Ray, Walter, Edwin and Montague, Mrs. Myrtie Obaugh, Mrs. Eula Ralston, Manila, Adaline and Irma, one brother, Henry Armstrong and a sister, Mrs. Mattie Hoover of Doe Hill. His funeral was conducted by Rev W.W. Stevens at McKendree on Saturday afternoon. Highland Recorder June 12, 1931 Joseph E. Armstrong passed to his reward on June 4, 1931 at the home of his son, R.W. Armstrong, at the age of 80 years 6 months and 24 days. He spent almost has entire, life in sight of McKendree church having been born and reared only a few miles away, and later moved to about a fourth of a mile of the place where his funeral was held. He united with the Methodist church in early life and was Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years. He also held various other offices in the church. He loved his church and his work. He never got over the death of his wife which occurred a little over four years ago, after her death it can be said that he was a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief. We hope that they are united today to part no more in that land where they will never grow old. He leaves to mourn his loss, one brother, Henry Armstrong, one sister, Mrs. Martha Hoover of Doe Hill; five daughters, Mrs. Bessie Ralston, Sheldon, Iowa; Mrs. Fred Obaugh, Augusta County; Mrs. Norvena Everett, Flemington, N.J.; Miss Adeline, Detroit, Mich.; Miss Irma, Staunton, Va.; also five sons, C.G. and Montague of Cochranville, Pa.; R.W. of Lone Fountain and Walter and Ervine of Sheldon, Iowa. His funeral was held from McKendree church Saturday at 2 o’clock, Rev. W.W. Stevens officiating. A large crowd being present. Burial was in the nearby cemetery.
