Description	:	Joseph E. Hardes, 84, of Miller, died Monday, October 15, 2007 at the Miller Good Samaritan Center. Joseph was born on January 9, 1923 in Polo to Anton and Sophia (Schaefer) Hardes. Joe was the youngest of eleven children and received his education in Polo, having graduated from Fairview High in 1941. Joe was a veteran of World War II, having served a brief time in... Read More	Joseph E. Hardes, 84, of Miller, died Monday, October 15, 2007 at the Miller Good Samaritan Center. Joseph was born on January 9, 1923 in Polo to Anton and Sophia (Schaefer) Hardes. Joe was the youngest of eleven children and received his education in Polo, having graduated from Fairview High in 1941. During his childhood and working life, Joe was a faithful member of St. Liborius Catholic Church in Polo. His father, Anton, was one of the founding members of St. Liborius in the late 1880's. Joe was a veteran of World War II, having served a brief time in Japan. After his military service, Joe spent the rest of his working life on his parent's farm near Polo along with his bachelor brothers, Alphonse and Clarence. This farm was homesteaded by their father Anton going back to 1887. Another farm was acquired sometime after that. The two farms have been in continuous operation by the Hardes family since 1887 to the present time. Current owners and operators are a grand nephew, Kenneth Lammers, and his son Brady Lammers, who lives on the original homestead. Alfie and Joe retired in approximately 1980 when they built a new home in Miller near Crystal Park. Alfie died in 1992. Joe was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Miller in his retirement years. In addition to his generosity to the church, he was a generous contributor to the Diocese of Sioux Falls and EWTN, the Catholic Religious Television Network. Joe is survived by 32 nieces and nephews and numerous grand nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters: Anna Lammers, Veronica Gasper, Mathilda Martinmaas, Lucy Miller, Mary Foerster, and Marcella Gebhart; four brothers: Carl, Xavier, Alphonse, and Clarence. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, October 18, 2007 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Miller with Father Chester Murtha officiating. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Polo, directed by Reck Funeral Home of Miller.
