I.- The following letter was received by Mrs. Joseph Flickinger of Sebring, Thursday and was the first information that her husband had died in battle in France: Somewhere in France, Oct. 11, 1918. Mrs. Joseph Flickinger, Sebring, Ohio. My Dear Madam: It is with many sincere regrets and deepest sorrow that I am thus addressing you and enclosing here with two pictures, one of yourself and baby and one of baby Betty Jane, which I personally took from the pocket of your brave husband who fell on the field of battle and who now lies in the eternal sleep, together with several comrades. I am not permitted at this time to give out the location, or other information, but the same will be a matter of record of the government, except to say that he was buried with a chaplain of the army present and the courtesies and honors afforded by the circumstances. Extending to you my heartfelt sympathy, I am, Truly yours, LT. JOHN E. BANGS, U. S. ARMY, A. E. F. Censored by Lt. J. E. Bangs. Joseph Flickinger left Sebring May 28 going direct to Camp Gordon, Ga., as a selective service man. He sailed for overseas in July and was soon on the battle front. He was 25 years of age and a worthy young man, well known in athletic fields. He is survived by his wife and daughter Betty Jane, mother Mrs. Huddleson, brothers Floyd and Carl all of Sebring, and sister Mrs. Mabel White, of New Castle, Pa. Joseph Flickinger was well known in Sebring. He was brave and left home because he felt it was his duty to help avenge the wrongs done by the Huns and his blood was not shed in vain. Joseph Flickinger was the son of Eli Flickinger of this place. He was born in Columbiana and his early boyhood days were spent here. The sympathy of all will go out to the bereaved wife and baby girl.
