He met death by accident at Defiance on December 22, 1923 at the age of 26 years and 11 months. He was married to Lilly Hulsebus on November 6, 1919. He leaves to mourn his sudden and early departure his wife and 2 children, Virginia Lee and Hazel May; his father and mother and the following siblings: (1) Gilbert of Defiance, (2) Walter, (3) Ruth, (4) Alice, (5) Mildred, (6) Joyce, (7) Paul, (8) Irene, (9) Otto, (10) Homer, (11) Mayme and (12) Deloris all of Harlan, Iowa and a large number of near relatives and friends. Preceding Joe in death was Olem, a brother who died in infancy in 1903. Joe was a man loved by all who knew him. A man of the home, of the church and of the community. His funeral, one of the largest ever held in Defiance, was conducted in the Evangelical church Sunday afternoon by his Pastor Rev PE Miller and assisted by Rev RQ Lundy of the Evangelical church at Harlan, Iowa. The sincere heart felt sympathy of the entire community is extended to the sorrowing wife and loved ones. The following is an excerpt from a story written by Mildred (Millie) Muller Miller entitled "I Remember" in 1985. A great catastrophe came to our family when our brother Joe was tragically killed in an engine accident. He and several grandsons of Grandpa Hulsebus (Peter Sr) had rented a large engine and a big saw to saw up some big logs for firewood. It was winter and cold and snow covered the ground. The belt of the engine was about to slide off, and Joe put his foot against the big belt that powered the saw. The thongs that held the belt together caught his pant leg and he was thrown into the huge fly wheel of the engine, and was killed instantly. His wife, 2 small children, Grandma and Grandpa and several other people were standing on a porch nearby. The trauma of seeing this lasted for years. He lives on in all of our memories and is sadly missed. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved and admired by all who knew him.
