Description	:	Joseph Eugene "Gene" Edwards, Jr. UNION, SC Mr. Joseph Eugene "Gene" Edwards, Jr., 89, husband of Frances Ferguson Edwards of Union was taken peacefully by the angels to his heavenly home on Thursday, January 7, 2010 after a brief illness. He was a faithful and active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and very family oriented. Gene was the son of Joseph Eugene Edwards, Sr. and Mattie Lake Edwards. He is survived by three daughters, Jean Edwards Byrd (Jerry), Martha Ellen Edwards (David Block), Susan Edwards Logan (Jeff); and daughter-in-law, Susie Gilliland Edwards. He was a faithful and active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and very family oriented. Gene was the son of Joseph Eugene Edwards, Sr. and Mattie Lake Edwards. He is survived by three daughters, Jean Edwards Byrd (Jerry), Martha Ellen Edwards (David Block), Susan Edwards Logan (Jeff); and daughter-in-law, Susie Gilliland Edwards. His only son, Robert Michael Edwards predeceased him in August 2009. He also is survived by seven grandchildren, Jennifer Gault Brown, Tamara Gault Yates, Christy Byrd Todd, Melissa Byrd Yates, Zachary Byrd, Tray Duncan and Reggie Duncan; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Gene was a World War II Veteran, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the 513th Parachute Regiment of the 17th Airborne Division. He made his first jump across the Rhine River into Germany on March 24, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart and European Service Ribbon with three battle stars. Returning home, Gene worked one year for the Postal Service and retired in 1984 from Milliken & Co. after 35 years of service. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Clemson University. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Family Life Center. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Chapman and Rev. Tommy McManess. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Chaplain Major Kelvin Todd with Military Honors.
