Description	:	Son of: Saba Nichols and Jane Philinda Weed. Joseph was born in Erie county in New York State and came to Van Buren County Iowa in the fall of 1853 with his parents. Joseph was born in Erie county in New York State and came to Van Buren County Iowa in the fall of 1853 with his parents. They settle near a village called Pierceville. He went to school in New York from age 5 years until he came to Iowa at age 13. He went to school every winter until he was 19 or 20. He worked on the farm with his father until he enlisted at age 24 on October 25, 1864. He served from October 1864 to July 1865 as a member of company A, 13th regiment of the Ohio infantry, as a private in the Civil War. He was discharged from Fort McClellan, by Captain Alexander Chambers in Louisville Kentucky, on 21 July 1865, with chronic pneumonia and a wound of the left foot. He received a pension of $19 from 1912 to 1915, then it raised to $22 until its end in 4 October 1915. Family talk says that he merged with General Sherman to the sea. He was caught and put in Andersonville prison, where he got smallpox. His face was so scarred from smallpox that he wore a beard thereafter. (This has not been proved as if 2007). When the war was over, he build a log cabin house and homesteaded in Upton, Iowa. It is believed that he got his land through the Civil War, as it was offered in Lou of mustard pay. He and David Huggins farmed together as their farm was close. (This information was told by Payline Nichols Powell). He fell off a horse, broke his leg, and always used a cane afterwards, exact time unknown. He rode 'rough-set' in those days. Joseph was 6'2" tall, head blue eyes, brown hair and fair complexion. Joseph joined the Methodist Church on May 6, 1894 and was a faithful member. Reverend Evans was a pastor at that time. His parents were of the Quaker faith and he was raised strict. It was said that he would not allow his wife, Elizabeth to have any books in the house except the Bible, especially no magazines, when they became popular. He would kill wild turkeys for food and he killed so many that Jane parens Elizabeth (Jane) refused to clean them anymore. He played the violin by ear and would play on Saturday nights for the square dances, which he walked to, to make extra money. However, his family was not allowed to dance! He had a Stratovariouis violin and he told his kids that the one who learn to play the best got the violin when he died. Clarence Otto was the one who excelled. Joseph's gravestone reads; "Co., A 13th Iowa infantry". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joseph and Jane were the parents of nine children: William Henry Nichols m.
