May 9, 2020 - This information was provided by findagrave member Jean-Luc Coubronne: "In 1817, after the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, an English regiment was stationed in northern France, in the village of Lespesses. In the regiment, there was a soldier from Bolton (Lancashire) whose name was Robert Flactif (also Flaltif, but probably Flatley). In Lespesses, he met a young lady, Catherine Pruvot, and had a child with her, whom he recognized legally (Robert Louis Joseph Flactif). But he never married Catherine and probably returned to England with his regiment (home and death unknown in France). On January 20, 1838, his son, Robert Louis Joseph Flactif married Ambroisine Josèphe Wambergue in Lespesses. The couple had several children, and, among them, Joseph, born in 1849. On December 14, 1871, Joseph married Octavie Marie Rifflart (Octavi Marie Rifflar Rifflar) in Nédonchel, Pas-de-Calais, France. He has mined coal in this vicinity for many years. He is survived by his wife, Rosa; a daughter, Mrs. Michael Zwer of Ottumwa; and sons Joseph, Harry and Lester of Ottumwa, Mitchell of Des Moines, Duff of Arkansas and Lewis of Des Moines. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made. “FLACTIFF FUNERAL,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” June 14, 1923: The Funeral of Joseph Flactiff, who died yesterday morning at his home, 326 South Benton street, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o’clock, at the residence. A.D. McClure of the Pentecost church, will have charge and burial will be made in Shaul cemetery.
