Joseph Francis Stringer was the son of William and Elizabeth Stringer, and brother of Archy Stringer, Co. G, and James Stringer, Co. C, 18th Mass. Infantry. The father, mother, and 7 of their 11 living children emigrated to the U.S. from Prince Edward Island in October 1854. Joseph Francis Stringer was the son of William and Elizabeth Stringer, and brother of Archy Stringer, Co. G, and James Stringer, Co. C, 18th Mass. Infantry. The father, mother, and 7 of their 11 living children emigrated to the U.S. from Prince Edward Island in October 1854. Joseph first enlisted on April 16, 1861, four days after the Rebels fired on Fort Sumter, and was mustered on April 23rd as a Private in Co. K, 3rd Mass. Infantry. After duty at Fortess Monroe at Hampton, Virginia, the Regiment was mustered out of service on July 22, 1861 at the expiration of its three month enlistment. He was a 20 year-old farmer from Carver, when he enlisted in that town on Nov. 1, 1861, being recruited by C.S. Hanard, and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on Jan. 14, 1862 as a Corporal with Company C. Per regimental records he was 5 ft. 9 in. tall, with a dark complexion, blue eyes, and black hair. Joseph was killed in action on Aug. 30, 1862 at Second Bull Run. His brother Archy was killed in the same battle. Both Joseph and Archy's bodies were returned to Massachusetts for burial at Central Cemetery, Carver. Their brother James died of disease at Yorktown on April 29, 1862.
