Mr. Grendler had been in apparently normal health and had worked all day Tuesday, and that evening had gone to the theater to attend the 730 o'clock show. Shortly after the show began he had the stroke. He was carried from the theater and after first aid had been administered was taken to his home, but he never regained consciousness. Outwardly there was no change in his condition Wednesday morning and while it was recognized as critical there was no indication of the end approaching until just a few moments before he passed away. Mr. Grendler had been a resident of Salem continuously for more than 20 years. During that time he had been employed at various times as patrolman on the county highways and as an assistant in several soft drink parlors. For several years he operated a similar business, which he sold to John E. Bies a few years ago. He was a general favorite in the community. A hard working, thoroughly trustworthy gentleman, he was devoted to the interests of his family and was sincerely interested in the welfare of his many friends. He was a good neighbor, a kind hearted and congenial friend and his sudden death at a comparatively early age is a great loss to relatives and friends alike. Mr. Grendler was a native of Germany, born on August 3, 1884, and had he lived until the third day of next month would have been 55 years of age. In childhood he came to America with his parents and after reaching adult age he came to South Dakota, being employed at Sioux Falls and Mitchell before locating permanently in Salem. In February, 1916, he was married to Miss Sophia Reif, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reif, in this city and they have made their home here to this day. Three children were born to them, Robert, Louis and Catherine Jean all of whom, with his wife, his aged mother, and several brothers and sisters, survive him. Funeral services will be conducted at nine o'clock tomorrow (Friday) morning at St. Mary's Catholic church, by Rt. Rev. B. Weber, and burial will be made in St. Mary's cemetery.
