Funeral services will be held 10:30 Wednesday, July 13 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Belle Plaine with Father Mike Mescher and Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 with a Rosary at 6:30 and a time for sharing to follow on Tuesday, July 12 at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine. Memorials may be made to the family. Online condolences can be sent to the family at hrabakfuneralhome.com. Joseph Frank Malecek was born on January 1, 1919 in rural Pocahontas, Iowa. His parents were the late Karel Malecek and Antonia Janurek Malecek. Unfortunately, Joe’s father passed away a month before Joe’s birth. The great Influenza Epidemic of 1918 snatched the lives of many young strong people and Joe’s dad was one of them. Joe graduated from Belle Plaine High School with the class of 1936. Although he was very eager to serve his country during WWII like his brother and sister were, he was never drafted. Instead Joe was asked to tend to the farming and to his widowed mother, who recently had lost her second husband. On November 24, 1947 he married Leona Marie Hala from Toledo, Iowa and they were married for 64 years before she passed away. Together they raised their family of seven children: Bonnie Pitz of Belle Plaine who was married to the late Dave Pitz in Newton; Gerald [Annie] Malecek of Sparta, Georgia; Donna [Gary] Mosbrucker of Johnstown, Pennsylvania; JoAnn [Bill] Robb of Webster City; Don [Carol] Malecek of Fairfax; Teresa [Bob] Hermsen of Belle Plaine; and Tim [Anne] Malecek of Marion. During the early years of married life Joe and Leona briefly lived on rented farms around the Dysart and the New Hartford area. Later they moved back to Belle Plaine. Joe was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. At the age of seven he remembered watching St. Michael’s Church being built. Prior to retiring he worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, along with other jobs. Throughout his retired years Joe remained very active on the farm. Joe and Leona enjoyed living in the country and gardening. They were part of the Friendly Neighbors Group. Joe just loved to travel and meet new people along the way. In addition to their frequent visits to Michigan and Pennsylvania to see their children and grandchildren, they also traveled to the annual Malecek Cousins Reunions that were held on his father’s side since the 1960’s. Other places Joe and Leona traveled included: California, Louisiana, Arizona, Seattle WA, The World’s Fair in British Columbia, and also what is now called the Czech Republic. Even in his mid-nineties after Leona had passed away Joe enjoyed traveling to Georgia, Wisconsin, Illinois, Branson, MO, and Portland, OR with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his seven children, his sister, Mary Thorman, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Milo and Juanita Hala of Toledo; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren along with 28 nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leona, in 2011, Grandson, Brian Mosbrucker, and his son-in-law, Dave Pitz in 2015. Joe was a kind gentleman. He was honest. He was humble. He loved his wife and all seven of his children always encouraging them to put their best foot forward.
