Description	:	Joseph Frank Mendez, 72, of Oelwein, died Thursday, Jan. 29, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. He was born March 29, 1936, in Oelwein, son of Frank and Juana Rodriquez Mendez. Mr. Mendez graduated from Oelwein Community High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked at John Deere Tractor Works in the foundry, retiring after 30 years of service. Mendez of Marion, Mardy Benson of Hawkeye, Crystal Hoisington of Oelwein and Ann Slater of Waterloo; a son, Steven Aiello of Readlyn; Keith Slater of Oelwein, to whom he was like a father; four grandchildren, Melana Sundstrom, Johnathan Hoisington, Jada Aiello and Danica Aiello; special friend, Laureen Slater of Oelwein; and three brothers, Vidal Joseph (Shirley) and Nat, both of Oelwein, and Robert (Patricia) of Flowood, Miss. Preceded in death by: an infant daughter, Laurie Mendez; and a brother, Augustine. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Oelwein. Public visitation from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, where there will be a military memorial service at 3:30 p.m. by Ross Reid American Legion Post 9 Honor Guard and a parish Scripture service at 4:30 p.m. Memorial fund: has been established in his name.
