A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton with military honors provided by the Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post No. 183 of Tabor, South Dakota. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral. Pallbearers are Glenn Malloy, Bob Malloy, John Malloy, Joe Syrovatka, Michael Houg, Nick Houg, Michael Wysuph, and Jeremy Syrovatka. Joseph was born July 2, 1910, southwest of Tabor, South Dakota, to John and Anna (Hajicek) Syrovatka. He grew up on a farm south of Lesterville and attended country school. On January 12, 1932, he married Lillian Machacek in Tabor. After their marriage, he farmed for a few years before starting Joe's Substation. He joined the United States Army in 1944 and served in World War II. During his time at the substation, Joe also operated a commercial spraying business and a fishing business, where he was well-known for his smoked carp. In 1992, he moved to Yankton and lived in the Sunrise Apartments for 10 years before becoming a resident of Avera Sister James Care Center. In his later years, Joe became an avid gardener. He was a lifetime member of the Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post No. 183 in Tabor and was also a member of the ZCBJ Lodge. Survivors include four children: Mavis (John) Malloy of Elk Point, South Dakota, Ervin (Marlene) Syrovatka of Lesterville, Carol (Richard) Houg of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Joann Syrovatka of Yankton; 20 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; one sister, Adeline (Donald) Hlavac-Mach of Yankton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian; two brothers, John and Jim Syrovatka; and four sisters: Anna Woods, Lillian Beringer, Beatrice Beringer and Evelyn Nedved.
