Read More	Lethbridge Herald Monday, February 12, 1934, Lethbridge, Alberta page 3 REAL OLD TIMER OF TABER DISTRICT CALLED BY DEATH JOSEPH GARRICK CAME FROM UNITED STATES IN EIGHTIES FUNERAL TUESDAY Taber - Feb 12 - Probably the earliest pioneer of the region tributary to Taber, of those who remained of late, another old-timer, resident of Taber for many years, crossed the divide about 7:30 am Saturday in the person of Joseph Garrick, rancher and contemporary of the early ranchers who viewed with disgust, or welcomed, as the case may be, the beginnings of the new era of towns and farms, railways and highways. The late rancher came from the US in the eighties to what is now Southern Alberta, and locating south of Chin Coulee, 15 miles or so nearly due south of the present town of Taber, had carried on operations there since with assistance of wife and family for nearly half a century though the family, now grown up, never knew of the start. These were the days of occasional Indian war parties and scalping, of the whiskey runner, the Mounted and incoming railway. The late Mr Garrick was ranching when old Samuel Gardner, father of Dave Gardner, Taber, ranching this side of the present Coaldale, was driving into the budding Lethbridge one day and discovered settlement spreading toward Coaldale vicinity. In disgust, at the approach of civilization, he returned home shortly to put a wide gap between it and himself by removing far east along Chin Coulee to resume ranching there. On the north side of the coulee has farmed for years, Alex Donaldson, Ft Macleod pioneer, fireman on the old A.R. & T freight, Lethbridge to Dunmore, who in the terrible 1893 winter had to take a mine pick and remove a frozen steer covered with ice and snow to let the engine pass the Mile 17 (Taber) watertank. The Garricks joined in the real estate boom here, erecting the large brick family residence on Hull Ave and three other dwellings, all still owned by them. Aged 73, the family almost all having their own homes. Decease of Mrs Garrick added to effect of serious internal injuries some time back came at the New Year to make the rancher's health precarious. Since then he grew worse and was lately removed to St Michael's Hospital, Lethbridge, where he succumbed. Funeral to be held Tuesday from martin Bros parlors, Lethbridge at 3 o'clock internment at Lethbridge.
