Monday in an auto accident two miles south of Ankeny on Highway 69. Joe Burley, 24, Route 2, Nevada, Ia., was killed when the coupe he was driving went out of control, ran 40 feet along the left shoulder of the highway and smashed into a concrete culvert. Pinned behind the steering wheel, Burley died from a broken neck and other injuries. Wayne Buttry, 25, Route 2, Ames, Ia., Burley's companion, suffered a broken leg, and head and internal injuries. Furlough. Buttry, just inducted into the army, is on the usual induction furlough. Deputy Sheriffs C. G. Lyons and Clarence Johnson removed the men from the car. Buttry was taken to Broadlawns General Hospital, where attendants described his condition as fair. He is expected to recover. Farm. Burley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Burley, have been in Colorado Springs, Colo., for his father's health. He had been operating their farm about five miles northwest of Nevada while they were away. A sister, Betty, had been keeping house for him. Other survivors include three other sisters, Mrs. Ethel Davis, Colo, Ia.; Mrs. Esther Grooms, Nevada; Mrs. Alice Ververs, who lives on a ranch in Colorado; and four brothers, Marvin, in the seabees; Virgil, with the air corps now serving in China; Lowell of Terril, Ia.; and Albert of Graetinger, Ia. The body will be taken to Lilly's Funeral home in Nevada.
