Description	:	Joseph G. Schum was born in Germany, June 9, 1826, and died March 30, 1906, at his home in Lawrence, aged 79 years, 9 months and 20 days. Deceased was 23 years of age when he left his home in the old world and sailed for New America arriving in New York in the fall of 1849, in which state he worked six years teaming. Schum was born in Germany, June 9, 1826, and died March 30, 1906, at his home in Lawrence, aged 79 years, 9 months and 20 days. Deceased was 23 years of age when he left his home in the old world and sailed for New America arriving in New York in the fall of 1849, in which state he worked six years teaming. In 1850 he married Mary Knittle, and to this union was born two sons, Louis and Joseph, and in the fall of 1855, he with his family came farther west and settled in the new state of Iowa, and this same year marked the death of his wife which followed after a serious illness of short duration. He re-married April 27, 1857, Celia Pahl, was the maiden name of his second wife who now survives him. To them were born, one daughter, Mrs. Jos. Theer, and two sons, John and William. With the family they followed farming in Iowa, until the spring of 1883 when another change of residence was decided on and this time they moved to St. Stephens, Nebr., where he with his boys engaged in the general merchandise business and continued until the summer of 1887, when he moved to Lawrence where he retired from business and his affairs were taken charge of by his two sons, John and Wm. The death of Mr. Schum marks the passing away of one of the first settlers of Lawrence at the time the town was established. While he was only able to share in its progress and welfare as a good citizen he was always ready and willing to give moral support, and lend a helping hand to any move that tended for the best interests of its people. He was a king-hearted, liberal man, social and genial in his nature, and every little boy and girl in the village recognized in him their friend, so pleasant and courteous was he at all times to those with whom he met. Strictly honest, upright and conscientious in all his dealings, in later years he lived the quiet simple life amongst his neighbors, enjoying their full respect and esteem, such as is merited by men who accord to their fellowmen all rights and priveleges peculiarly their own and are always mindful to observe them. His sickness extended over a period of 22 months during which time he was confined to his chair or bed. With other complications, bright's disease finally developed and perhaps was the primary cause of death. The bereaved wife, and deceased's four sons and daughter, were present at the funeral. The funeral service was conducted Monday last at the Catholic church by Rev. Father Fleckinger, after which the remains were conveyed to the Bohnart cemetery where interment was made.
