Read More	Joseph GRIFFIN was born August 9, 1763, in Culpepper County, Virginia, migrated to lands around the Ninety-Six District with his family at age 11, entered military service at the age of sixteen, and died April 3, 1850, near Martin's Depot, [Laurens R.R. Station], Laurens District, South Carolina. A monument to his life and military service had been erected in Clinton, Laurens County, South Carolina. Joseph GRIFFIN, 1763-1850, married three times, and to these marriages, twenty-one children are attributed. Joseph GRIFFIN stated in his application for military pension in 1832 that he was born on August 9, 1763, in Virginia, as recorded in his father's bible which he stated he had transferred to his own bible which in 1832 was now destroyed. Joseph GRIFFIN, 1763-1850, was living in the adjoining districts of Laurens when he was called into military service and volunteered. Joseph GRIFFIN entered military service on November 1780 as a volunteer private under Captain William HARRIS in Colonel Joseph HAYES Regisment of Militia and continued in military service until January 1782; he was in service with the exception of a short time when sick with the small pox in August 1781 though he was in camp when taken lodging in a house during his confinement and followed the troops as soon as able. Colonel HAYES was killed at the Engagement at the [Hayes] Station bearing his name when Colonel Levi CASEY succeeded to the command of his Regiment. Joseph GRIFFIN, 1763-1850, stated in his application for military pension that he was in the Battle of Blackstocks with SUMTER; at the Battle of Cowpens with MORGAN and in the battle of Guilford with General [Nathaniel] GREENE. He stated he never had any discharge given to him in writing, but that he was personally known to Major William MILWEE who lived near him during the war and knew him from his boyhood. Joseph GRIFFIN’s name was not on the pension rolls of any agency of any state although he had been for some years in the receipt of a pension from the State of South Carolina. These statements he swore to and subscribed in open court before B. J. EARLE, Presiding Judge, Sanford VANDIVER, a clergyman and Thomas H. McCANN gave the standard supporting affidavit, in Laurens Court, Laurens District, South Carolina. Charles ALLEN (S17819) made oath on October 20, 1834, in the presence of William COWAN, JP, Laurens District, South Carolina, that he served with Joseph GRIFFIN in the Revolutionary war, that he was with him frequently, and believed him to have been a soldier for a considerable length of time in the militia of the State of South Carolina. State of South Carolina, Laurens District, Robert LONG [S7157] duly swore on his oath on October 20, 1834, in the presence of William COWAN, JP, Laurens District, South Carolina, saith that he was well acquainted with Joseph GRIFFIN, a private in the Little River Regiment of Militia in the Revolutionary War, and that he served as a Refugee from the British and Tories under Colonel Joseph HAYES in the same Regiment with himself; he under Captain William HARRIS—that he saw him in said Company in the first week of November in the year 1780, that he believes he was in the Battle at Blackstocks under General SUMTER against TARLETON and at the defeat of Colonel MOORE of the Tories under Colonel WASHINGTON and at the taking of the Fort of the Tories at WILLIAMS plantation by Colonel HAYES, and also at TARLETON’s defeat at Cowpens under General MORGAN; and that he believed he served faithfully in American Service until the end of the Revolutionary War. James DILLARD, Esq. [S6797] an old and infirm person, duly sore on his oath on October 16, 1834, saith in the presence of Robert LONG, one of the Justices of the Quorum of the District of Laurens, South Carolina, that he was acquainted with Joseph GRIFFIN, a private Soldier in the Little River Regiment of South Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War under Colonel Joseph HAYES in Captain William HARRIS' Company he believes from about the 1st of November in the 1780 and that he was, he believes, in the defeat of Colonel MOORE of the Tories on Bush River and also at the taking [of] WILLIAMS’ Fort on Little River; and also at TARLETON’s Defeat by General MORGAN at the Cowpens; and also at the Siege of Ninety-Six under General [Nathaniel] GREENE; and that he has no doubt but that he served faithfully as a militia Soldier to the end of the Revolutionary war; the Colonel & Captain HARRIS both dead. William ENTRIKEN [S3532] made oath in the presence of Robert LONG, one of the Justices of Quorum of the District of Laurens, S.C. that they were well acquainted with Joseph GRIFFIN who applied for a pension during the War of the Revolution as they all resided in the same neighborhood. He had the reputation of having been a faithful and active Whig soldier and neither of these deponents ever heard the same in any manner questioned. Thomas ENTRIKEN [W7112] swore in the presence of John N. WHITHER, No, Pub. & Q. Ex. Off., on September 30, 1834, that saw him in the years 1780 and 1781 when in the Service and believes his statement of his service to be substantially true. Major William MILWEE swore to and subscribed on September 30, 1834, before Joseph N. WHITHER, Not. Pub., & Q. Ex. Off, [that he] was well acquainted with Joseph GRIFFIN tour in the revolution and knows that he was always reputed a good and faithful soldier in that struggle and believe that his statement of his services is entitle to full belief Included among the papers filed under Joseph GRIFFIN’s name is a petition dated March 5, 1856, filed in Laurens District, SC, by Frances Susan GRIFFIN in which she states that she was the minor daughter, aged 20 years, of Joseph GRIFFIN, a revolutionary soldier, who received $40 annually as a pension from the government. She sought the bounty land she believed she may have been entitled to under the law. In this petition, she states that her father died on April 3, 1850 in Laurens District, SC. Also attached is a document entitled "Claim of Minor Children for Bounty Land" dated December 20, 1881 in which Frances Susan MONROE, aged 46, as the child of Joseph GRIFFIN. In this claim, she claimed that her father served in 1776 & 1777 in the regiment commanded by Col. James WILLIAMS, in Laurens District, SC. She stated that her father was in the Battles of Kings Mountain, Musgrove [Mills], Blackstocks, Hammonds {Hammond’s Old Store] Cowpens, Guilford C.H., Long Caine, Ninety-Sic, Eutaw Springs, and massacre at Hayes Station. She stated that she was born September 28, 1835 in Anderson County, South Carolina (ostensibly when her father was age 74). She gave her mother’s name as Nancy BLACK. In this claim, she stated that her father died near Martin’s Depot [Laurens R.R. Station] in South Carolina on the 3rd County, SC. She gives her mother's name as Nancy Black. In this claim, she states her father died near Martin's Depot [Laurens R. R. Station] in South Carolina on the 3rd of April 1850 and that he left no widow surviving him.
