After his return, he outfitted men in the military and whalemen for nearly 20 years. He owned many ships including one he chartered to the US government during the Mexican War to carry coal to Vera Cruz and the 2nd Columbus, a 74-gun ship-of-the-line in 1842 as a flag ship for Commodore C. W. Morgan. In Kansas he bought a section of land in Pottawatomie County and started a town called Rockingham. There he started a saw mill. He also was the builder of the Pony Express Station in Marysville, Kansas. Built in 1859 it is the oldest building in Marshall County and the only original home station along the Pony Express route still at its original site where it is now a museum. His son William was a joint operator at the livery stable and owner of the Tremont Hotel. The 2nd son, Alonzo was a druggest and owned a drug store. He also served as justice of peace and probate judge. His son, Joseph, following his father's concern for freedom, served in the 9th Regiment of the Kansas Calvary Volunteers for three years. He got tyhphoid fever at Van Buren, Arkansas and was honorably discharged. His daughter, Josephine married Edward Rayner of Reading, Massachusetts. Their mother, Mary Colby Cottrell died in 1972 and is buried in Marysville Cemetery. Joseph retired and died in Reading where his daughter lived.
