O'Keefes, 3258 M street, by turning on the gas. Read More	Evening Star, February 19, 1909 Joseph H. Lowe, twenty-nine years of age, who was employed in a dairy at 460 K street northwest, committed suicide last night in a room at J. J. O'Keefes, 3258 M street, by turning on the gas. His body was found this morning when Mr. O'Keefe went about the house examining the fixtures to ascertain the cause of the poor supply of the illuminating gas. Mrs. O'Keefe complained that she was unable to get flow enough of gas to cook her breakfast, and her husband soon found the case of it. The lodger had not been seen about the premises this morning, and when the proprietor of the restaurant and rooming house reached his room he detected a strong odor of escaping gas. Detective McGill Grove and Policeman Shepherd who were summoned to the house, forced an entrance to the room and found four gas jets open. Lowe was dead, and apparently life was extinct long before his body was found. When the young man called a the M street house last night about 9 o'clock and engaged the room for the night, it is stated, he was perfectly sober. He did not mention his name to the clerk, and his identity was brought about by the finding of a card upon which his name was written. Before going to his room it is stated, he drank a glass of port wine and purchased half a pint of whisky. The half-filled bottle was found in his room. Friends say they have not the slightest idea of the reason why he took his life. He was a work yesterday morning and wore his best clothes when he left the dairy about noon. Coroner Nevitt made an investigation of the affair had have a certificate of suicide. It is stated that the father of the deceased lives on Grant road and that two sisters are employed in a Pennsylvania avenue dining room. Relatives arranged for the removal of the body to an undertaking establishment to be prepared for burial. Sent by Gary Virts.
