Description	:	Former Port Townsend resident Joseph Harold Hornbuckle died in Martha & Mary Health Services Center, Poulsbo, of age-related causes at 84. He was born in Morgan County, Ark., to John Cleveland and Sallie Lee (Stiles) Hornbuckle. He joined the Army in 1942, and served with Gen. George Patton's 12th Armored Division in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He captured a German officer who surprised him by handing over his watch, which was later given to Mr. Hornbuckle's father as a gift. Read More	Former Port Townsend resident Joseph Harold Hornbuckle died in Martha & Mary Health Services Center, Poulsbo, of age-related causes at 84. He was born in Morgan County, Ark., to John Cleveland and Sallie Lee (Stiles) Hornbuckle. He joined the Army in 1942, and served with Gen. George Patton's 12th Armored Division in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He captured a German officer who surprised him by handing over his watch, which was later given to Mr. Hornbuckle's father as a gift. After the war, Mr. Hornbuckle tried farming, then decided to return to military service. He joined the Air Force in the late 1940s and served in the Korean War before retiring as a staff sergeant in 1963. His employment then included aircraft-part fabrication for the Boeing Co., as an equipment mechanic in Alaska and as a motor-home mechanic in Sequim. He married Margaret (Crutcher) Bumgarner on Feb. 17, 1987. They lived in Port Townsend, enjoying gardening, motor-home camping at Oak Bay and decorating their home for the Christmas holidays with thousands of lights and Santa Claus scenes. Their holiday displays won local awards. Mr. Hornbuckle was a resident of Martha & Mary for seven years. His wife joined him there in 2004; she died in 2007. Survivors include stepson and stepdaughter-in-law James and Susan Bumgarner of Pleasanton, Calif.; brothers Naaman Lester of Decatur, Ala., John "J.C." Jr. in Albertville, Ala., and George Hornbuckle of Hooper, Utah; sisters Violet Gabel of Cleburne, Texas, Mary Wishon of Midwest City, Okla., and Bertha Sue Bailey of Union Grove, Ala. He was preceded in death by wives Theda Bernice and Estelline as well as Margaret; brothers ¬Millendar, Morris, Melvin and Charles Hornbuckle; and sister Jane Hornbuckle Waggoner. Services: Private inurnment in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Townsend.
