Read More	JOSEPH HEIN KILLED, From The Harlan Tribune (Harlan, Iowa) - Wednesday 30 Dec 1885 Early Sunday morning the news reached our citizens that Joseph Hein, of Cass township, had been killed in an altercation in a saloon at Panama Saturday night, over a game of cards. As near as can be learned deceased was engaged with three others among whom was the defendant Mendenhall in playing seven up, the time being about eleven o'clock at night. During the progress of the game deceased and Mendenhall became engaged in a dispute as to the count, Mendenhall claiming that Hein was purposely counting wrong. High words ensued and Mendenhall struck Hein a blow on the head knocking him down. It is asserted that he then struck him once or twice with the stool he had been sitting on. He then left for home. Hein remained conscious about ten minutes after which he became insensible and was removed to a small room adjacent Beason's saloon where he died six hours after. A constable was sent to arrest Mendenhall who was found in bed, not knowing of the result of the row until informed by the officer. He was immediately brought to Harlan and placed in jail. We learn from the coroner's inquest and post mortem examination held by Drs. Burks, Watters and Gregg over the body of the deceased Sunday night that he came to his death by a blow dealt over the forehead on the right side, producing internal venous extravasation at the confluence of the large sinuses at the occipital protuberance by contra~coup concussion, causing a blood clot of at least twenty three ounces. There, was also considerable external contusion, laceration and extravasation on the right side of the head, before and behind the ear. There was no fracture of the skull. Mendenhall is a young man about thirty years of age, medium height, light complexion and wears a heavy mustache. He resides on a farm four miles west of Panama and has a wife and four children. He was brought before justice Weaver Monday morning on a charge of manslaughter and waived examination. His bond was fixed at $3000. He has engaged Messrs. Beard & Myerly, of this city to defend him. The coroner's jury returned a sealed verdict, but it is understood to be that deceased came to his death by a blow or blows dealt on the head by some weapon in the hands of Wm. E. Mendenhall. Mr. Hein was a member of the Catholic church and was buried in the cemetery belonging to that denomination yesterday. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his untimely end. Our information as to the cause of the trouble and the manner in which deceased met his death may be incorrect, as we have been compelled to depend largely on rumor for our knowledge of the unfortunate affair. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ MURDER AT PANAMA, "Shelby County Republican," Thursday 31 Dec 1885 Joe Hein, a well~known German farmer who lived in Cass township about eight miles west of this city, was murdered in Panama last Saturday night in a saloon by a man by the name of Mendenhall. It seems that some dispute arose about the counting in a game of cards and from words the disputants came to blows, when Mendenhall struck Hein and knocked him down, then, as he was attempting to rise his assailant seized a stool and dealt him a blow on the forehead, causing a concussion of the brain and rupturing the blood vessels at the base of brain. Hein soon sank into a stupor from which he never rallied. He died about four o'clock Sunday morning. Coroner Burks was notified and proceeded at once to hold a post mortem examination of the remains, the verdict of the jury being our authority for the fact stated above. Hein leaves a family in comfortable circumstances. Mendenhall was arrested on Sunday morning shortly after the death of Hein and lodged in the county jail at this place. The people at Panama are wrought up to a high state of excitement and fears were entertained of a lynching. Mendenhall claims that he struck Hein in self defense. Thus the saloons are continuing to make history in this county. Poverty, distress, murder, the same sad tale being repeated over and over again.
