J.H.Drinnin, prominent pioneer farmer, who would have attained the age 91 years had he lived until Aug. 5 passed away at 5:50pm yesterday at "Home Farm" the farm where he established his home in 1883, and where he had resided continuously throughout the last 52 years. About two years ago, Mr.Drinnin, who had been hale and hearty until then, suffered a apoplectic stroke which seriously impaired his eyesight and left him unable to walk without assistance. Since that time he had spent most of his waking hours in his wheelchair, gradually becoming more feeble. Yesterday morning he did not feel strong enough to get up. About 2pm his son and daughter-in-law, Mr.and Mrs. George Drinnin, who have made their home with him for years, noticed that he appeared to be weakening and they summoned the family physician. Efforts to stimulate his strength, however, were unavailable. He lapsed into a coma shortly after 4 O'clock. Joseph Henry Drinnin was born in a log cabin on a farm in Stark county, Illinois, Aug 5, 1844. As a young man he learned the brick layer's trade and became a building contractor in Toulin, Ill. After his marriage there to Mrs. Harriet Pomeroy Hickok on Sept.2, 1868, he continued in the contracting business for awhile and then returned to farming. In 1882, he came to Columbus and bought 160 acres of railroad land in Columbus township, 5 1/2 miles northwest of the city, making the purchase from J.E.North who was then in real estate business. Returning to Illinois, he bought his family here on Mar 1, 1883 and established their home on the farm, which he later named "Home Farm". For the first few years the farm provided only meagre returns and Mr.Drinnin supplemented his income by working part time in Columbus as a bricklayer. While in the employ of James Pearsall, the contractor, he assisted in building the second Ward School House in 1884, layng many of the bricks that went into the walls. Another of the jobs on which he worked were of local historical interest was veneering with brick the old Grand Pacific hotel in 1886. The hotel, then owned by George Lehman, pioneer hotel man, was torn down a few years ago. Five years after coming to Columbus, Mr.Drinnin quit the building trade and from that time devoted his entire attention to his farming operations, in which he acquired well-merited financial independence in the years that ensued. Though he did general farming, he specialized in seed corn and fruit-apples and peaches. He planted at least five different orchards on the place at intervals during the years. Mr.Drinnin was an ardent Democrat and through out his lifetime, maintained a keen interest in politics,local, state, and national, though he never aspired to office, other than to serve his home school district and township. Back in the 80's and 90's, he was member of the Dist.44 school board for a number of years, serving at different times as director, moderator and treasure. In the 90's and soon after the turn ..... ( last few words of sentence cut off). Throughout his life his family, his friends and his farm were his hobbies-and also keeping a diary. He began keeping a diary when he was 21 years old and he made it an inflexible rule to jot down in it at the close of each day, the happenings of that day which were of interest to him. He continued to do so until he suffered the stroke two years ago last March. Fraternally, Mr.Drinnin was identified with Independent Order of Odd Fellows.He joined the order in Illinois when he was a young man;transferred his membership to the Columbus lodge after coming here, and at the time of his death had the distinction of being one of the (oldest) members of the order in Nebraska. Among his prized possessions was the insignia bestowed upon those who have been members of the Order for 30 years or more, which he received some years ago. Mr.Drinnin retired from active farming nearly 20 years ago, when he turned the management of the farm over to his son, George, but he continued to make his home there, never having desire to move into town. He survived by one son, and two daughters, Mrs.Eliza Stevenson, of Toulon,Ill., and Mrs. Henry Yonkie of Richland;one step-daughter, Mrs.Emma Perry of Long Beach, Calif.;15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.Mrs. Drinnin passed away on Feb 3, 1901. Their eldest son,Samuel P.Drinnin, died on Mar 24, 1924 and a daughter, Miss Evelyn Drinnin on July 22, 1930. Funeral services for Mr.Drinnin will be held at the Grass chapel at 2:30pm Monday.Rev.A.T.McFarland, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Committal services in Columbus cemetery will be conducted by officers of Wildey lodge No.44 I.O.O.F. in accordance with the ritual of the Odd Fellows. The body will lie in state at the Gass Funeral home until the hour of the funeral. Fifty years on one farm- that's the record of J.H.Drinnin, venerable Platte county pioneer whose 89th birthday anniv- sary last Saturday was celebrated with a family reunion Sunday at his farm five miles northeast of Columbus where he resides with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr.and Mrs. George Drinnin. Born in a log cabin on a farm in Stark county,Illinois, Aug 5, 1844. Mr.Drinnin forsook farming for a few years in his young manhood to become a bricklayer and contractor in Toulon, Ill. But after his marriage he returned to the farm here, and a farmer he has been ever since, though for few years after coming to Platte county he supplemented the meager income that could be wrested from a farm in those first years by working at his trade in Columbus. He first came out from Illinois, June 12, 1882, bought the farm northeast of Columbus and returned to Illinois,bringing his family out for permanent residence here one March 1, 1883. Farming was "slim picking" for awhile,and his trade stood him in good stead, as he obtained work in the building line in town. Mr.Drinnin has one son and two daughters living-George, on the home farm;Mrs.Eliza Stevenson, of St.Paul,Minn., and Mrs.Henry Yonkie, of Richland-all of whom were among the group of relatives and friends who gathered about him Sunday to join in the observation of his 89th anniversary at which four generations of the family were represented. His wife passed away in 1901 and a son Sam Drinnin died several years ago. Though his health has been impaired since his serious illness last April and he now spends most of his time in his wheelchair, his interest in each days events hasn't dimmed one iota and he is determined to live to observe his 100th birthday anniversary. When asked the other day to what he attributed his longevity Mr.Drinnin recalled of his childhood. "In 1856," he said "my good old mother took me on her knee one day and said, "son, you see some of the other young men drinking, gambling and fighting; don't ever touch liquor." And then he added, "Im 89 years old now and i've never taken a drop of liquor." Another thing to which he credited his longevity was the fact that he had never been a "heavy eater." Though he hasn't been a "heavy eater", he enjoyed thoroughly, as did all the other folks present, the delicious dinner Sunday noon that featured the birthday party in his honor.The event was attended by about 20 relatives and by a number of friends who were invited to join the family circle for the occasion. They showered him with bouquets of flowers and presented him several luscious birthday cakes and other gifts.The afternoon hours were devoted to informal sociabilities, and the men indulged in a kittenball game. Mr.Drinnin couldn't get out of his wheelchair to romp about the kittenball diamond, but he could and did derive full measure of happiness from the gala gathering of those near and dear to him and from the fact that two of his old time friends recently from Washington D.C., Congressman Howard and J.C. Byrnes called in the afternoon to extend their felicitations and to enjoy a chat with him. Relatives attending the birthday dinner were;Mr.& Mrs.Henry Yonkie and their son and daughter-in-law,Mr.& Mrs.George Yonkie, of Richland;Mrs.Eliza Stevenson, of St.Paul,Minn., and her son-in-law and daughter Mr.& Mrs. carl Geiser and their two children, of Genoa;Mr.& Mrs.George Drinnin and their daughters, Armona and Dorothy, and son, George, jr., and Mrs.Drinnin's mother, Mrs. Mary Rowland of Columbus; Mrs George Drinnin's son-in-law and daughter, Mr.& Mrs. Albert Houser and their sons, Merlin and Leland, of Polk county, while among the friends present were Pat Haney and sister,Misses Lizzie and Agnes Haney, of Columbus, Miss Rozmus of Columbus township;Earl and Walter Egger, of Columbus and Gordon Nelson, who is employed on the Drinnin farm.
